| About Chajabal
Chajabal is a small village high in the Guatemla mountains. Until recently it was accessible a bumpy dirt road. In the rainy season, the road usually was impassible.
Sitting on a mountain ridge, Chajabal's climate is chilly and usually damp. The village is surrounded by pine forests and fields of corn. The streets are unpaved and narrow. Homes do not have indoor plumbing.
The people are Quiché (key-CHAY) Maya Indians, descendants of the ancient Maya civilization that ruled over present day Guatemala, southern México, and much of Central America. Chajabal residents maintain their centuries-old culture, including their distinctive style of dress and the Quiché language. Many now also speak Spanish. For the most part, the people are farmers, laborers, and home makers.
