| The Lutheran Church in Zacapa
Divine Savior was one of the first Lutheran churches established by missionaries of the Lutheran Church-Missouri Synod. At the time, Zacapa was a major city about halfway between the capital city and Guatemala's Carribean port at Puerto Barrios. It also was the major crossroads for train traffic and commerce for Guatemala, Honduras, and El Salvador.
Divine Savior is the "mother church" of several nearby village congregations, where pastors and teachers of Divine Savior lead weekly worship and Bible studies.
In 1953 the congregation added a day school in downtown Zacapa. Soon thereafter, a new school was built on what is called "Loma Luterana" (Lutheran Hill). In 1970, a middle school (Básico) was added. The devastating 1976 earthquake destroyed the school's facilities. The people rebuilt the school, this time with modern and larger classrooms with more ventilation for Zacapa's hot climate.
Career levels were added beginning in 1978. The first career programs offered were Primary Education and Homemaking Education. Soon programs in Accounting, Specialist in Community Development, Secretarial, Office Administration, and Bilingual Secretarial were added.
