NoVA LCM - Current Status(draft minutes from 2/2/02)A George Mason Planning Meeting was hosted by Pastor Ron Qualley at Lord of Life Lutheran Church January 22, 2002. It was attended by Charles Sturtz, Patricia Freitag, Judy Simonson, Jane von Maltzahn representing Resurrection in Arlington, a member of Holy Trinity in Arlington, and Pastor Qualley and Pastor Darcy Tillman from Lord of Life. Charles Sturtz reported that GMU is about 2.5 miles from Lord of Life and has housing for only 3000 of its 28,000 students. Pastor Qualley suggested a peer ministry program which would eliminate need for pastoral staff, while organizing students in cluster groups and connecting them with congregations who would each pay them a few hundred dollars for their work, either on campus or in their congregations. Jane von Maltzahn reported that Pastor Qualley had hosted a student group in his home every Sunday night for about ten years for Bible study and pizza and conversation. That ministry had been discontinued about a year and a half ago, but students continue to attend the new Saturday evening service at LOL. Charles Sturtz will speak with GMU President Alan Merton who is a member of Lord of Life congregation re peer ministries, the relationship between student fees and organization, and whether student applications check a box listing religious preference.
