Why Ride a Bike?

Bicycling is the sort of thing that one "comes back to". As children we long for a bicycle to give us freedom of action. We find ourselves by testing ourselves. We cross streets into other neighborhoods and find the world around us and how we can manage to fit in. We test ourselves against our fears and our doubts. But in the end the bicycle is generally put aside for other means of transportation with more cache, more respect.

But that feeling of the "first ride" when all of a sudden you were alone on the bike riding down the street for the first time comes back to you. That feeling that you were the Captain of your fate and the Master of your soul.

As we grow older and acquire more

responsibilities that vision occurs less and less often. We drown in a sea of troubles, financial, vocational and marital. We long for that feeling of simple freedom and the lack of fears. We become a crippled mass of doubts and worries.

Two wheels brings back our sense of wonder, of fearlessness and of love again. And that cessation of worry, if only for a few hours, makes us better able to cope with the world around us.

The feeling of fitness that you gain from bicycling will astound the most health minded individual. The exercise aerates your blood and puts your mind in high gear. Thoughts come bursting through in such a rush that you wonder if you'd been sleeping before.

Your step gets a spring in it and your eyes get a gleam that you didn't know that you still had in you. You become motivated to lose weight and to boost your performance. You grow interested in the world around you again. Your mate can see the difference at a glance.

And there are times when you are riding that you are tempted to simply shout with a joy that had disappeared from your life.

Get a bike.
