Who Picks the Sunday Bible Readings? For our Sunday
readings, our church uses the Revised Common Lectionary, which
is widely used by Lutheran churches. Each Sunday typically includes
an Old Testament reading, a Psalm, a reading from one of the
Epistles (books written as letters to the early churches by apostles),
and a reading from one of the Gospels (books about Jesus' life
and ministry). The readings are tied together around a common
theme. That theme is supported by the pastor's message and the
day's hymns so that an overall message may be presented for the
day. The lectionary readings run in three cycles, which each
focus on a different Gospel (the Gospel according to John is
used in all three years). A new cycle year begins at Advent (around
the end of November). The readings for the day are printed in
our church bulletin so that you may read along, take notes, and/or
take the scripture home for further study. Lectionary readings
help individual churches reliably present an overall picture
of the Gospel message, while allowing them to add their own local
flavor through the sermon and music for the day.
