ELCA Ministry Change
As many of you may be aware, the ELCA (Evangelical Lutheran
Church in America) recently voted to lift the ban on active homosexuals
serving as rostered church leaders (they must be celibate or in a life-long monogamous relationship. It is important to note that
this change will take time to implement and that decisions about
the leadership of our local congregation will continue to rest
with our congregation.
The ELCA calls us to have discussion on this complicated
issue and all members are encouraged to consider its moral and
social implications. Some congregations are discussing leaving
the ELCA because of this decision. Please speak to your council
members if you have a strong opinion about this issue so that
your voice may be heard.
Whatever your opinion, the important thing for now is to stick
together and make a decision together. As a congregation we serve
our local community first and are doing some important work in
that community. This decision by the larger church organization
should not interfere with our local efforts to serve God and community.
