| Catawba Valley Chapter, 2008 ENDINGS and 2009 BEGINNINGS |
The board wishes to thank the 120 Congregation Coordinators, the Congregation Champions, all the members of the Catawba Valley Chapter 31381, and the members of our 40 congregations for all the help you gave us to achieve the status of Chapter of Excellence. It is quite an honor to receive this award for the 4th year in a row. Let’s get going in 2009 and make it a 5th year to attain that status. THANK YOU.
Our 40 congregations held 104 activities to use $56,800 from Care in Congregations provided by Thrivent Financial. A few activities were: meals and other events to help youth go to the Gathering in New Orleans, building funds for new construction, medical needs, home/church repairs, feeding the hungry, quilt and prayer shawls materials, Love Offerings, and a variety of other needs. You also raised $99,000 and volunteered approximately 7,000 hours. Be proud of your accomplishments. A few Care Abounds in Community activities were: food for our Cooperative Christian Ministries and our Soup Kitchens, Lutheran World Relief quilts and blankets, medical expenses, wheelchair ramps, Samaritans Purse, quilt and prayer shawl ministries, Kids in Need, a variety of local charities, and Christmas gifts. 46 activities were conducted to use all $49,600 that we were granted. We had training for our Congregation Coordinators, attended a training session for our board members, attended a Thrivent Builds with Habitat training session, held a THB groundbreaking and dedication, built a THB house, held a Ballgame event at the Crawdads stadium, held an Election Meeting, and the board held many meetings- as a group, teleconference, and Emails. We held in-person meetings at Christ, Hickory, and the board appreciates their allowing us to meet there.

We will be building another house in 2009. Wouldn’t it be awesome if we had every congregation make a contribution-no matter how small-to our build this year? I have dreamed about this happening for 2 years, but it hasn’t happened yet. I have faith that in 2009 every congregation will send a contribution to our new Thrivent Builds Specialist, Denise Sellers. Her address is 134 37th Avenue Pl NW, Hickory, NC 28601. Email her for information at dssellers@charter.net. Let’s make her first year an awesome year by sending funds and volunteering when the time comes. Watch for more information on this activity-Groundbreaking, family selection, building site and dates.
Our 2009 meetings will be listed on our Catawba Valley Website. Please check out the dates and you, as Thrivent members, are welcome to attend. We ask that you get your Care Abounds in Communities requests to us early in the year for events that will happen even in October or early December. This way we can have the funding that you request set aside for your event. This helps us to budget our funds. We encourage you to meet with your Congregational Coordinators early in the year to plan how you want to use your Care in Congregations funds. The 3 Congregation Coordinators are not the only ones who should plan the use of the funds. All Thrivent members are encouraged to share in the planning.
| LOOKING FOR SOME VOLUNTEERS |
We are in need of an Activity Director for our Catawba Valley Board for 2009. Wanda Helton has resigned and we would like to fill her position as soon as possible. We know there are folks out there who would enjoy filling her position. Please contact us and volunteer. In 2009 some of our board members will need to take off 2 years because they have served for 4 years. Please consider becoming a Catawba Valley Chapter Board member in 2010.
