Catawba Valley Chapter, HAPPENINGS IN YOUR CHAPTER
THRIVENT BUILDS WITH HABITAT FOR HUMANITY
Have you seen the progress made on our 2009 TBH house? It is fantastic what volunteers can do. At the groundbreaking on April 19, we met the new homeowner, Pattie Good and her son, William. She was brought to tears a couple times as she expressed her gratitude for helping her dream come true. She has already completed half of her sweat equitiy hours. If you or your congregation has not volunteered to help with the building, it is not too late. We still have a few slots open for those who want to volunteer. We are behind in our fund raising to pay our Chapter's 10% of the build. Nine congregations have contributed and we still must raise $5120. I am still hoping that all 40 congregations will help us reach our goal by holding or participating in a fund-raiser activity. Our area ( NC, SC, GA) is leading the way again this year in completing and raising funds for building our Thrivent Builds with Habitat houses. Let's not let the Catawba Valley Chapter slow down the progress.
TAKE ME OUT TO THE BALLGAME
Let's celebrate Fathers' Day and Thrivent Day at the Ballgame on Sunday, June 21st. Your board has reserved 225 tickets for our chapter members. We ask that our guests pay $6, which includes a $2 voucher for food or merchandise. Come out and join your fellow Thrivent Chapter members and guests. Let's take our Dads to the ballgame! Reservations can be made beginning June 7 by contacting Barbara Gilbert at 828-256-2471, bgilbert@charter.net or Sylvia King at 704-462-2521, thrivek@bellsouth.net. We need to know the names of all for whom tickets are being reserved. We will hold your ticket until 15 minutes before game time. Those not picked up by game time will be given to those who come without reservations. We ask that you bring some canned food to be shared with our Christian Cooperative Ministries in our county. We want to share our blessings and abundance with others.
A group of youth and adults will spend Saturday morning, June 6th at Lutheran Home West, Hickory, doing some landscaping and garden beautification. Thrivent is providing Join Hands Day funding for this activity, as well as the funds to complete a food project with the Corner Table, Newton. Please contact Eric Griggs, Chapter Youth Director, at mtoliveyfm@embarqmail.com or at 828-324-6198 to find how you and your youth can get involved with this activity. This is a great way for our youth to learn about our need to help others. Join the group for fun and work.
CARE ABOUNDS IN CONGREGATION AND COMMUNITY FUNDS
Seven of our 40 congregations have used all of their Care in Congregations funds and 21 have entered activities to use part of their funds. What has your congregation done? I hope you are aware that you can use these funds to supplement dollars in a fund-raiser activity or for materials in a hands-on-service activity. The chapter has Care Abounds in Communities funds available. These funds do not have to be used just for Lutherans. We have given supplemental funds for Lutheran World Relief health kits and quilt supplies, Golf Tournment for ECCCM, Spaghetti Supper for GHCM, and individuals for medical bills, Safe Harbor for supplies, gravel at Lutheridge, PUSH(Special Needs Children), and Burke County CCM. We are happy to supplement community organizations when Thrivent members work together to hold a fund raiser. The 6 Thrivent household members do not have to come from the same congregation. A team can directly make a request from the board without your Congregation Coordinators being involved. We read in the paper about activities that our churches have held and would liked to have supplemented your projects if you had contacted us for funding. Please contact Sylvia or any board member for assistance if you are planning to hold a fundraiser and 6 Thrivent household members will be working as a team. We want to help.
We need some new volunteers to become board members in 2010. Several of our members have served 4 years and must remove themselves from the board. All positions are open however we are especially in need of a Vice President, Financial Director, Congregational Service Team Director, Communication Director, and 2 Special Advisors. We know there are many capable folks out there who can fill these positions. Some positions take little time in addition to board meetings, which are once a month at a location or by Teleconference. The outgoing member and other board members will help you become comfortable with your position. Please give one of our positions prayerful consideration and volunteer to serve. If volunteers don't come forward and you are asked to serve, please say, "Yes, I will. Just teach me what I need to know."
