Catawba Valley Chapter, SUMMER UPDATE ON OUR CHAPTER
On September 13 at 6:00 p.m. there will be a service of worship held at Old St. Paul's, Newton. It will feature Jake Roper, who is a former Nashville studio session and live performance professional. He was instrumental in starting two large churches and was their Worship Team Leader. They are Rivertown Church (Presbyterian) of Hillsborough, NC and Rocky River Community Church of Concord, NC. He will be bringing his band for this special event. This will be a time of worship, but also intended to be an educational example of a style of worship church folks could consider for contemporary mission and ministry. Following the worship service our chapter will serve refreshments in the Family Life Center. All are invited and the young folk who went to New Orleans will especially enjoy this event.
Our summer has been fruitful. Our third Thrivent Builds Homes with Habitat has been completed and dedicated, and the Patty Good Family will be living there when this letter reaches you. The board wishes to thank those dedicated volunteers who spent many hours building the house. There were 152 volunteers from 13 congregations of which 139 were Lutheran and 78 being Thrivent members. Out of our 40 congregations donations have been received from 14 congregations or individuals from congregations to help pay our Chapter’s commitment of $8085. We have collected $5321.76 and with $689.93 left from last year, we still need $2073.31 to pay our 10% portion. If your congregation could host a fundraiser, then the board would not have to come up with a way to raise the remainder that we owe. We know that we can raise this amount and be able to say that donations paid for this house as we have done for the past 2 years. Thank you for all the help you give us in all our endeavors.
CHAPTER BOARD ELECTION TO BE HELD
Our election meeting is set for Saturday, October 17 at Christ Lutheran Church in Hickory. It will be a dinner meeting at 5:00 p.m. There will be entertainment and the election of officers. Reservation information will be sent to you at the appropriate time. However, before the election takes place, we will need to have some volunteers to step up and say, “Yes, I will serve on the board for 2010. We need nominees especially for: Vice-President, Congregational Service Team Director, Financial Director and Communication Director. These positions are held by folks who have served for 4 years and must stay off the board for 2 years. The job descriptions are on the Thrivent.com. website. All elected chapter leadership positions are considered “open positions” each year, even though there may be some members who have not completed their four consecutive terms. At the end of this letter, the current board members contact information will be listed so feel free to contact them to discuss the position that you might wish to fulfill.
CARE ABOUNDS IN COMMUNITIES FUNDING
Our chapter helped sponsor the Bethel Block Party for Thrivent members and the Oxford School District residents. We also have awarded supplemental funds to Lutheran World Relief, quilting groups, Medical Aid for several folk and groups, soup kitchens, Christian Ministries, Hospice, Guardian Ad Litem, Kids in Need, Safe Harbor, PUSH America, build handicapped ramp, and various other charities within our community. We still have some funds available, so if 6 Thrivent members from 6 different households wish to have a fund raiser for a community charity, please feel free to submit a request. The board wants to use Care Abounds in Community funds to help as many people as possible.
CARE IN CONGREGATIONS FUNDING
We have 31 congregations that have used all of their funds or have plans to use them. There are 9 congregations that have not entered an activity. If you have plans for your funds, please enter your information as soon as possible, so the board will know your plans. One congregation has left $20 and cannot use it for an activity since you need $100 remaining in order to hold an activity so be careful not to leave money less than $100. Contact us if you need help or ideas on how to use your Care in Congregation funds.

HAVE YOU USED THIS MEMBER BENEFIT IN 2009?
Are you aware that as a member of Thrivent Financial for Lutherans, financial gifts you make to a Lutheran organization might be able to be supplemented by Thrivent Financial for Lutherans? Through Thrivent Financial's GivingPlus® program, members can donate financial gifts to two different Lutheran organizations enrolled in the program each year, and Thrivent Financial will contribute $1 for every $2, up to $300 per year for each organization. For example, if you donate gifts of $600 or more to two eligible Lutheran organizations each, Thrivent Financial will contribute an additional $600 ($300 for each organization). In addition, Thrivent Financial will contribute an additional $25 for members who volunteer 25 hours or more at the organization receiving their gift.
All you need to do is complete a GivingPlus Member Gift form (available online or from the Lutheran organization) and submit it with your donation to the Lutheran organization. It's a very simple process.
For complete details and guidelines about this one-of-a-kind member benefit program and for copies of the Member Gift form, go to www.thrivent.com/community/outreach/giving/givingplus/index.html.
