LENTEN WORSHIP 2012

WATCHERS ON THE HILL is a chancel play for the Lenten
season presented in eight short acts. The play brings
worship participants to the foot of the cross on the day
of Jesus’ crucifixion, as a series of characters—some
historical, some fictitious—come face to face with the
reality of Christ’s death through the lens of their own
unique perspectives. With the cross as the focal point
and the final words of Jesus as the binding thread, each
two-person act takes worshippers another step closer
to the final moments of his life, all the while exploring
and celebrating God’s amazing plan to save His people.
The acts are woven together through the use of
Scripture, Gospel-grounded reflections of a Narrator.
ASH WEDNESDAY-FEB 22-WORSHIP - 7:00
Act I-THE CROSS CARRIER

“As they led him away, they seized Simon from Cyrene, who was on his way
in from the country, and put the cross on him and made him carry it behind
Jesus.”—Luke 23:26

Simon of Cyrene, a stranger who is “just in town on business,” finds himself
the unwilling participant in the execution of Jesus. Troubled by what he
knows will come and haunted by the role he has been forced to play, Simon
wants only to “leave this wretched place,” and rid himself of the weight of
the cross he has carried up the hill.

GOSPEL MESSAGE: Even as Simon left the cross in the dust of Goglotha,
so do we leave our sins.
