As she was growing up, she lived in Milwaukee, WI; the Detroit, MI suburbs; Eau Claire, WI; Auburn, AL; and Columbia, SC. She attended grade school at Christ the King Lutheran School in Southgate, MI; junior high school in Eau Claire; and high school in Auburn. She was confirmed on 29 Apr 1979 in Eau Claire, Eau Claire County, WI.⁵⁶⁰ at Epiphany Lutheran Church. Her sponsors were Duaine and Vicki Griggs. She graduated in 1983 in Auburn, Lee County, AL.⁷¹⁹ from Auburn High School. She graduated in 1988 in Columbia, Richland County, SC.^718,719 from the University of South Carolina with a bachelor's degree in Sociology and a minor in social work.

After graduation, she worked at and managed several social services agencies in Columbia, SC; Asheville, NC; Eau Claire, WI; and Chippewa Falls, WI. She is currently the Director of the Voyagers Community Learning Center as well as the Director of the ATOD (alcohol, tobacco and drug abuse) prevention program for the Chippewa Falls school district.
