17. Thomas GRIGGS (*) (`) was born on 5 Dec 1585 in Boxted, Suffolk County, England.^{6,12,18,19,24,28,29} (His date of birth is also listed as 2 Sept 1585 and 1587.) He emigrated in 1636 from Boxted, Suffolk County, England.^{30,31,32,33,34,35,36,37}

An article in the Commemorative Biographical Record of Tolland and Windham Counties, CT notes that: "Thomas Griggs came from England to Roxbury, Mass., in 1639, and brought with him his son Joseph." (The obituary of John Chandler Griggs says that his ancestors came from Northamptonshire, England, in 1637. A report entitled The Descendants of Chauncey Wright Griggs and Martha Ann Gallup based on The History of Woodstock, Connecticut, indicates that he settled in Roxbury in 1636.)

Excerpt from "Genealogy of The Griggs Family": "The earliest colonial ancestors bearing the name of Griggs settled in Massachusetts, Virginia and North Carolina. The New England families descended from George and Thomas, who arrived from England about the year 1635.... The original settlers in Massachusetts found their off-spring moving to Connecticut, or New Hampshire, and then to New York, and later to Michigan, Ohio and the West and Northwest...." Thomas and his children were the Massachusetts branch of the family.


Another article in the "Genealogy of The Griggs Family" states, "Thomas Griggs, who came from England in the spring of 1639, settled in Roxbury. With him were his wife, Mary, and two sons, John and Joseph." (Note: "Mary" was actually Grace Wells.)

Lyle Griggs' Notes: "Came to the US before 1636. Settled in Roxbury, MA with his wife and children. Named in the original town records of Roxbury 1636-1640. Estate listed as 12 acres. When he died, his estate was shown as 125 pounds."

He died on 23 May 1646 in Roxbury, Suffolk County, MA.^{6,18,19,29,34,37} (His place of death may have been Roxbury Crossing. His date of death is also listed as 23 Jun 1646.)

Thomas GRIGGS (*) (`) and Grace WELLS (*) were married in 1615 in England, United Kingdom.<sup>6,30,38,39,40</sup> (Their marriage year is also listed as 1617.) Grace WELLS (*) was born between 1590 and 1595 in Suffolk County, England.<sup>12,28,41</sup> (Her surname may have been Greene.) She died before 25 Sep 1639 in Roxbury, Suffolk County, MA.<sup>12,24,29,42</sup> (Her place of death may have been Roxbury Crossing.) She was buried on 25 Sep 1639 in Roxbury, Suffolk County, MA.<sup>42</sup> Thomas GRIGGS (*) (`) and Grace WELLS (*) had the following children:
