Ways to be Involved

Acolytes: Acolytes participate in the worship service by lighting the altar candles and extinguishing the altar candles. They also assist with the distribution of grape juice during the sacrement of communion. In these traditions, the lighting of the altar candles in the worship service is a symbol of Jesus' coming into the presence of the worshiping community. Before the extinguishing of the last altar candles, the acolytes relight their "candle lighter" and then process out into the narthex. This symbolizes that Jesus Christ is for all people everywhere. It also symbolizes the light of Jesus Christ going out into the world where believers are called to serve. Similar to those in the Anglican tradition, acolytes in the Lutheran Church wear robes called albs with a cincture.

Altar Guild: The mission of the Altar Guild is to the care of God's Altar. Members of the Altar Guild are dedicated to properly and reverently preparing the Nave for all worship services. This includes regularly scheduled Sunday services as well as wedding rehearsals, weddings, baptisms, funerals, ordinations and special occasion and holiday services.

Angel Tree: During the Christmas season, a special tree is erected in the Church with the names of families who need items of clothing. Members of the congregation are invited to take names and bring in items for a family.

Choir: Members of the congregation who participate in the choir sing during the regular Sunday worship services, funerals, and special occasion and holiday services. Choir rehearsals are held on Wednesday evenings. The choir does not sing during the months of June, July and August.

Community Happenings: From early to mid June, volunteers go to Cumberland Court, just down the street from the Church, to teach young children God's message.

Counters: Counters are responsible for accurately counting and recording the weekly offering and other contributions that are collected during the worship service.

Deacons: Deacons participate in the worship service by carrying a processional cross. They also assist with the distribution of wine during the sacrement of communion and reads various prayers including the "Prayers of Intercession" throughout the service.

Eccumential Food Pantry: The Food Panrty, housed in the Church's lower level, is 100 percent volunteer supported and operates Monday thru Friday except on major holidays. The first Sunday of each month is dedicated as "Food Pantry Sunday." Members of the congregation may bring their donations to the Church on this day.

Lectors: Lectors read the First and Second Readings from the scriptures and the Psalm.

Nursery: During regular scheduled worship and holiday services, members of the congregation volunteer to staff the nursery. The nursery is not staffed during the months of June, July and August.

Presenters: Members of the congregation volunteer to walk down the isle with the bread and wine prior to the distribution of Communion.

Ushers: These volunteers greet members of the congregation as they arrive for worship service. They help seat members and distribute the bulletin. They also collect the offering and present the offertory gifts prior to the distribution of communion. They assist with handing out and collecting the wine cups during communion.

Flower Deliveray Team - A team of ten Messiah congregants are now visiting Messiah-at-Home members with bouquets of flowers! The altar flowers that we all enjoy each Sunday are delivered to ten church members who are not able to attend church regularly. Volunteers are scheduled on a rotating monthly basis. You can help with this outreach program simply by donating extra vases or even empty cardboard half- gallon milk or juice containers. If you would like to be a visitor, would like to be visited, or can assist in any way, please contact Judy Townsend 737-6959 or mandj18@verizon.com.

Messiah Cares - Provides a meaningful connection between our at-home or confined members and the active congregation. Committee members regularly visit these members and share Messiah events through conversation, CD recordings of recent services, and copies of recent bulletins and The Messenger. The committee has also been gathering a personal church- related history of these members to add to our 150th year celebration materials. Contact Linda Roberts (labrooke@mac.com or 737-9997) if you are interested in joining this ministry.
