YOU ARE WELCOME HERE

Pastor Greg, some kids and congregation
FROM YOUR PASTOR
"Religion that is pure and undefiled before God, the Father, is this: to care for orphans and widows in their distress, and to keep oneself unstained by the world." James 1:27

Ash Wednesday is February 22 with Worship and the imposition of ashes at 7:00 p.m.
Then, on Leap Day, February 29, the congregation begins the first of five soup suppers starting each week at 6:00 p.m.
And this year OUR CONFIRMATION YOUTH ARE "TAKING OVER" LENT!
Each week they will highlight work of the ELCA's World Hunger Appeal (www.elca.org/hunger) and talk about how God uses us to touch the lives of others.
Five youth will be offering meditations in each week's study and reflection time. The remaining youth will divide up to help the adults who are serving the soup supper with set-up, serving and clean-up. Then they will be dividing up to sit with adults for the table conversations (after we eat). They will also have discussion questions to share with their table.
Each week, some youth will also fill different responsibilities in the closing worship.
As a congregation we are proud of our youth and want them to have worthwhile opportunities to develop and contribute their gifts of leadership.
Lent is the special season in our Church year when we are more mindful of what our Lord Jesus gave in service for us in love, than for what he taught. So in this season our youth want to lift up opportunities for service in Christ's name. Hence, they are using the ELCA World Hunger Appeal as an example that expands our horizons and invites us to look far and wide at what God is accomplishing through Jesus' call to "love one another as I have loved you."
Please plan now for these Wednesday's of Lent and be a part of this good youth "take over!"
~ Pastor Greg

PARISH NURSE REPORT
Sitting: Hazardous to Your Health
Here is another easy, no-sweat way to markedly improve your health in the New Year -- stop sitting so much. You will live longer.
Mounting evidence suggests that sitting for long periods increases the risk of obesity, diabetes, cancer and early death, even for people who exercise daily. And yet, Americans now sit more than they sleep, spending an average of 10 hours per day in a car, at work and in front of a television. Older adults are the worst offenders, according to federal government statistics: Almost three-quarters are sedentary, and more than four in 10 get no leisure-time physical activity at all.
To reduce your cancer risk, the American Institute of Cancer research is urging Americans to add mini-breaks from sitting to a daily regimen of getting at least 30 minutes a day of moderate-to-vigorous exercise. If you reduce sitting by five minutes an hour, at the end of a long day, you have shaved an hour off your total sitting time. That advice applies as well to "active couch potatoes", who hit the gym or take that daily brisk walk, because some research indicates daily exercise is not enough protection from the harmful effects of a sedentary lifestyle.
Women who reported sitting more than six hours a day outside of work had a 34% higher risk of death than those who sat fewer than three hours daily, according to an American Cancer Society study. This was true even for women who exercised regularly. Physically active men were 64% more likely to die of heart disease if they sat more than 23 hours a week in front of a TV, compared with those who sat 11 hours a week or less.
Prolonged sitting appears to have powerful metabolic consequences, disrupting processes that break down fats and sugars in the blood. In animal studies, inactive mice and rats quickly develop higher blood fats and lower levels of good cholesterol, which together increase the risk of cardiovascular disease. An Australian study suggests a link between a sedentary lifestyle and several key biological indicators of cancer risk, including insulin resistance, inflammation and body weight.
So it seems smart to say, "Get off the couch!" or wherever you find you spend too much time sitting and "Get a move on!"
With prayers for your health and healing,
Mary Garmer, R.N. Parish Nurse

FRENCH RIVER RINGERS under the direction of Mary Garmer
You can choose to sing in the French River Choir directed by our director, Paul Peterson. The choir numbers approximately thirty voices. They are accompanied by one of our three organists during the choir year which runs from September through May. The choir practices on Wednesday starting at 7:30 p.m.

The FRENCH RIVER RINGERS perform monthly and special performances during Easter and Christmas. They are directed by Mary Garmer. The Bells number about 12 including substitutes. They practice on Sunday at 8:15 a.m. They recently added a set of handchimes to add a different sound to their musical selections.

Good Gifts: For any occasion
Last month we talked about ELCA Good Gifts, which appear in the giving catalog of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America. It is also located at www.elca.org/goodgifts . The gift ideas, which are listed on the bulletin board also, are gifts of animals through God’s Global Barnyard. Animals provide families living in poverty with food, funds and fertilizer—all for a better future. Gifts to God’s Global Barnyard support animal-related projects of ELCA World Hunger. These gifts are filled with meaning and love. ELCA Good Gifts are a special way you can help make a significant impact on the mission and ministries of our church while giving a gift to a friend, pastor, teacher, secret prayer partner neighbor or other loved one at Christmas, birthdays or anniversaries.
After you’ve completed your ELCA Good Gifts shopping, visit www.elca.org/goodgiftscards for cards and creative ways to announce your gift. You can order by regular mail using the order form on the bulletin board and the cards there can be used to announce your gift. Good gifts are part of ELCA World Hunger Appeal and receive no funds fro ELCA benevolence gifts. Your Social Ministry Committee
