Study Bibles
For this course, it is strongly recommended that you use one of the following study
Bibles - and it would be good to own one of them.
Most modern Bibles have footnotes giving
explanations of (and alternatives to) various phrases;
most "study" Bibles also have a paragraph or more of introduction to the individual
Bible books, a good collection of maps, extensive footnotes, and other
helpful material.
- The New Oxford Annotated Bible, third edition, with the Apocrypha
- The HarperCollins Study Bible, with the apocrypha
- The New Jerusalem Bible, standard edition
- The Jewish Study Bible
- The New Interpreter's Study Bible
- Lutheran Study Bible
(part of the Book of Faith initiative of the ELCA
- The Lutheran Study Bible
a more conservative work from the LCMS
Those of you in congregations with active men's groups should also be aware of the Master Builders Bible For Men, a publication of Lutheran Men in Mission. While not a true study Bible, this does have some helpful discussion questions, primarily of the "faith reflection" category.
Translations
It is often helpful to compare several translations to see some of the options
for understanding and interpretation. You might consider having some of these translations available for your use:
- The New Revised Standard Version (NRSV), an ecumenical translation (used in the New Oxford, HarperCollins, New
Interpreter's, and Lutheran study Bibles)
- Tanakh, the newer Jewish Publication Society translation of the Hebrew Scriptures (used in the Jewish Study Bible)
- The New Jerusalem Bible, a British Roman Catholic translation
- The Revised English Bible, a British ecumenical translation
- The New American Bible, an American Roman Catholic translation
- The New International Version, a conservative Protestant translation (used in the "Master Builders" Bible)
- The English Standard Version, another conservative Protestant translation (used in the LCMS study Bible)
