Pr. Kenyon picRev. Timothy Kenyon

I enjoy watching people plant gardens as hand and trowel move in unison removing just enough soil to make a small hole. Then with gentle hands the plant is placed into the freshly dug hole. However, before the young plants are placed into the ground, the roots of the plant are dipped in water from a nearby pail. With soaking wet roots the plant is returned to the earth and fresh nearby soil is gently compressed around the plant stem. Then the gardener steps back, glances at the new planting(s) and smiles.
This rite of planting reminds me of God’s gift of baptism. Gently we are soaked in the waters of our baptism, adopted as God’s children, and made members of Christ’s body, the church. But like all plants, we are in need of the gifts of God to be nourished and sustained in order to grow in the relationship which Christ has called us into. Our nourishment comes as we gather to hear the Word spoken and when we receive the sacrament of Holy Communion with our brothers and sisters in Christ. In worship we confess our sins and the need for forgiveness. What an incredible gift! Just as a plant begins to whither and lose hope of bearing fruit for the good, God awakens and renews us abundantly. But there is more. Bearing fruit for the sake of the kingdom means sharing the gifts that God has given with those who have not heard the good news, Jesus.
Summer is not our “down time” in this congregation. Our youth are busier than ever serving Christ on a Mission Trip to Milwaukee the end of July. Families and children will have opportunities to enjoy “Movies on the Lawn” as announced. Vacation Bible School is scheduled on five evenings July 15-19. On Tuesday, July 23, 7:00 p.m., the Swing Choir from camp LOMC will be sharing their fruits of music with a great concert in our church sanctuary. This “Swing Choir” is comprised of 20+ youth (mostly Jr. high age youth) who simply love to sing. They will be touring at various churches throughout our synod. Please consider signing up to house two youth/or adult on Tuesday evening following the concert. A bed and a shower is all they ask for. Breakfast will be served by our youth and men’s group the following morning at the church prior to their departure.
And of course… take time to do some gardening this summer and rejoice in the goodness of God’s great and abundant earth. “The earth is the Lord’s and all that is in it, the world and those who dwell therein” (Psalm 24:1).

Breaking News

The quilts on display are just some of the 602 quilts made by the Sewing Group this past year. They will be distributed to Lutheran World Relief and local charities.
We want to thank everyone in the Sewing Group for all their hard work. Our group is over 30 members strong and includes men and women, people who work on Tuesdays at the church and people who work at home, members of St. John’s and friends from the community. We all work together to help people in need.

Movie Night GIF Movie night has been postponed to Wednesday the 19th as Parish Education decided to take precautions and cancel due to the severe weather expected this past Wednesday. We apologize for any inconvenience this may have caused anyone. We will still be showing the movie Spirit and we will have our concession as usual. This movie is licensed under CVLI #503773562.

Take 5 art 100px I read a very good devotion this past week that has really stuck with me. It’s a story of a couple driving thru Idaho and stopped to see a flock of sheep bedding down. The author told of how it reminded him of Psalm 23. But where was the shepherd? asked the couple. The sheep appeared to be alone and a few had wandered away from the flock and were walking toward a deep gully. Then they heard a loud whistle, and saw the shepherd high on a hill, keeping watch on his flock. The shepherd’s border collies heard the whistle and sprung into action. They herded the drifting sheep back to the flock. Are you the flock of sheep, the wandering sheep or the shepherd? I am all three. Sometimes, in the same day. When we begin to wander, do we hear the “whistle” of our shepherd? Our Good Shepherd? Our shepherd is watching over us all the time. You may not see him, but he can see you! God promises he will seek out his sheep, feed them in good pasture, and bind up the broken.

SWING CHOIR COMING TO ST. JOHN’S
You won’t want to miss hearing the “Swing Choir” perform at St. John’s Lutheran Church, Tuesday evening, July 23, 7:00 p.m. Each year the choir rehearses at camp LOMC in preparation for their tour to area churches. There is no charge for the concert, but a free will offering will be received to help cover their costs. The choir consists of 20-25 youth with 4-5 additional sponsors.
Would you be willing to house 2 youth in your home following their Tuesday evening concert? All they need is a bedroom/bed for sleeping and use of a bathroom/shower. Host families/individuals would select two youth (2 males or 2 females) as indicated on the signup sheet which will be made available in the near future in the narthex. Assigned youth choir members would then ride home with you following the concert. In the morning (Wednesday) we ask that host families return them to the church for a breakfast which will be served to all swing choir members and host families prior to their scheduled departure. The exact time for the breakfast is yet to be determined. Our thanks to our men and youth group for hosting the send off breakfast!
Watch the bulletin, newsletter and local newspapers for more information about camp LOMC’s youth swing choir. It promises to be a great evening!
If you have questions, please contact either Jeff Whalen (Director of Youth Ministries) or Pastor Kenyon.

We are in need of the following Sunday school teachers for next year: Adult Sunday school class and 7th grade. If you are interested in teaching either of these classes on Sunday mornings during the school year, please see Carol Ploch or call the church office. What a wonderful treasure our children are and what an honor to teach them about Christ’s love.
There is an opening on the Parish Education Board. If you are interested in this ministry, please contact Carol Ploch.

High School Leadership Lab will be July 22-27 at Augustana University. This lab is designed to assist our youth in acquiring skills that will be useful in their home congregations, synodical and national youth ministry settings. See Jeff for a packet if you are interested.
