Before coming to Crandon, Philip Lehmann worked in the Lord's harvest field in Garrison, Nebraska. He had 4 children: 1 son and 3 daughters - Arnold, Winfred, Doris, and Ruth. His last surviving daughter, Ruth, was born in the Crandon parsonage. 3 of his grandsons (the sons of Arnold) are all pastors.
In their second year at Crandon, the North School, just across from the church, was gutted by a fire. His daughter Winfred remembered having to have classes in a room above the butcher shop. Regardless of the room, she said she had the best teacher of her life that year. Each student had a science textbook to read from.
Pastor Lehmann had 5 churches that he served, including Mole Lake. Winfred remembered that he liked to fish near Mole Lake, and would go along with a Native American guide. He usually would come back with "3 sizable snake pickerels."
Winfred remembered that many of the Lutherans they served in Hiles were German Russians who had been brought to the area by a lumbering company. They were paid in scrip.
