(26 Sep 03) Saturday, Castillo Fuerte (Mighty Fortress) Lutheran Church marks its third anniversary of proclaiming the Gospel in Guatemala City with a day-long celebration. Castillo Fuerte was established with the help of Missionary Herburt Burch and many mission-minded Lutherans in Guatemala City who desired to reach out to the city’s 3-million inhabitants.
The Youth Group will take part in a variety of sports activities in the morning and in the afternoon the Children’s Club will enjoy a piñata party.
Later in the day the people will gather to "thank our Lord for all the blessings [with a worship service] at 6:00 pm, followed by a dinner prepared by the congregation," writes school board member Nury Milan.
A bazaar will include booths for the Lutheran Hour of Guatemala and their Gospel materials, the Bible Society with Bibles and other materials available at special price (and some free of charge), members Redeemer of the World of Santiago Zamora with hand-woven textiles for sale, and a Castillo Fuerte Church member who owns a coffee farm will distribute coffee at less than one dollar a pound.
Castillo Fuerte also is home of the Guatemala City's first Lutheran school, which opened in 2002 with 39 students in Kindergarten through 6th grade. Castillo Fuerte now has an enrollment of 114 and has begun a middle school department. Students come from a variety of backgrounds, from those living in Guatemala City's dump to the middle class.
