(10 Oct 03) A Kansas-based mission agency which supplies scholarships for children in over a dozen countries is sponsoring a study tour to Central America February 3-14, 2004. This is the fourth “Mission Study Tour” sponsored by the Children’s Christian Concern Society (CCCS), with the purpose of educating others about the history of the LCMS Mission work in Central America as well as the ministries of national Lutheran churches, pastors, and teachers. Tour participants also see first hand the fruits of the CCCS’s work through supporting children’s education.
The study tour includes visits to several scholarship sites where students are receiving financial assistance to attend school. In addition to visiting the students, participants will meet the national teachers and pastors. They will visit various indigenous villages, Spanish colonial and Maya ruins, and Lake Atitlán, considered one of the world’s most beautiful lakes.
Led by Guatemala tour guide Nury de Milan, the tour is limited to fifteen participants. The cost of $1250 (double occupancy) includes ground transportation, lodging, entrance fees, tips, and breakfasts. Additional trip options are available, including a day trip to Tikal and two days in Nicaragua. To learn how to register, e-mail cccs@kslcms.org, or call Edie Jorns at 785-539-6052.
CCCS was established in 1968 when it opened a boarding house for thirty rural students to attend Divine Savior Lutheran School in Zacapa, Guatemala. Today, it serves over 9,000 students in over 100 scholarship sites in thirteen countries. It is present in Latin America, the Caribbean, Africa, and the Middle East.
They also will learn about the cultures of Latin America and the Maya Indians.
