Mark your calendar! The 18th Biennial Yagow Reunion is set for Sunday Aug. 12, 2012 with special activities during the afternoon and evening of Saturday Aug. 11, 2012.

The main reunion event on Aug. 12 (Sunday) will held at Bethlehem Lutheran Church and Parish Hall, Altamont, IL. Registration will begin at 11:30 a.m. in the Parish Hall. A catered noon lunch, Yagow heritage presentation, Yagow trivia, storytelling, and old-fashioned fellowship will round out our day.

Reunion attendees are invited to share handed-down ancestral stories, tales and/or family history "tidbits."

Additionally, the Yagow reunion event will include these Saturday (Aug. 11) activities:

> Pre-Reunion Social Get-Together (Beginning at 5:00 p.m.) - Bring your own lawn chair, picnic supper and beverage to the Altamont Community Park (we have a pavillion reserved). This special informal gathering will provide extra visiting time for out-of-towner Yagows to reacquaint with local Yagows.

Jagow Church
The Lutheran church in Jagow Germany is steeped in history and tradition. It is in this village that the Jagow name originated.

At the center of their villages and cities, the Germans built churches that share common features throughout the Uckermark region. The church in Jagow, built out of fieldstone, is not ornate, but it not without art.

The settlers in Jagow built their church on one of three hills of the peninsula. It is believed that this church was built between 1200 and 1250. From the size of the church, it can be surmised that the congregation was relatively large at the time of it's construction.

The church was destroyed by fire on August 10, 1887. All the remained after the fire were the stone walls. The present church was rebuilt during 1888-1892.

The church in Jagow is classified as an "armed church" since the area around the church is surrounded by a stone wall which served as a retreat for the people against enemy attack. The tower of the church could also be protected for a long time.

One of the bells in the bell tower of the Grimme Church.
Pictured to the far left is the altar inside the Grimme church. The altar consists of a late-renaissance form. On the left of the altar is the figure Jacob the Younger (with club) and on the right side is the figure of Peter (with key). In the middle, the risen Christ.

Also pictured is one of the bells inside the church bell tower located near the sanctuary. The bell tower stands 33 meters tall. It was probably built orginally for defense purposes at what was then an important intersection in the Uckermark.

Our Jagow family is deeply rooted in the Lutheran church. The Lutheran church in Grimme stands as a legacy landmark to our heritage.

Grimme is first mentioned in 1284. On March 10,1284, the Dukes Otto and Cicero note in a certificate (receipt) citing the Bentz brothers for bestowing upon them five bushels of rye. The Bentz brothers are mentioned as landowners in Grimme.

The first record of German settlement in Grimme goes back to 1220.
