Generally speaking in the Lutheran church an Elder is someone who is not part of the clergy, with a faith that is more than theoretical. An Elder is usually well respected and is responsible for the spiritual climate and temperament of the congregation and is to assist the pastor in the spiritual care of church members. They are more often advice givers with caring shoulders and a sympathetic ear and are there for the congregation when needed. The elders in the Lutheran church serve under the Pastor and should have the characteristics as written in 1 Timothy, chapter 3.The Elders of Holy Cross come from many different backgrounds. Each have strengths and weaknesses that the other Elders complement and/or encourage. One item that you won’t find in 1 Timothy is, “an Elder will have a computer and use it to the Glory of God.” Fortunately for Holy Cross some of your Elders do have computers and feel that computers can be a helpful tool in spreading the Gospel. The computer can be a useful tool to aid a member in reaching their Elder, and a way to voice praises and concerns for others to read. The internet is an Outreach tool for the purpose of “In-reach.” Your Elders want to see your personal spiritual climate grow and blossom and if you feel most comfortable doing that from your living room then so be it. (We can start from there.)
I have created a website, called Elder Spot, for the purpose of better communication between the Elders and the members. I try to touch base with my souls, but my time is limited due to the constraints of life. You have heard the saying, “Not enough time in a day?” In the stillness of the evening, when it is too late to make calls, my thoughts often lead to Holy Cross and to my God. I wanted a way for people in our church to profess their beliefs and share them with others. I wanted a place where a member could go to find tools to strengthen their faith and read thought provoking material. I wanted a place where you could go to find things, “That they didn’t teach in Sunday School.”
The Elder Spot is a website where any member of Holy Cross Lutheran Church with a computer can visit and feel at home. How many members do you know that “Snowbird” for the winter? When away from home you can check in and feel like you’re still a part of a loving family. The possibilities of what this site can do are enormous. You can read words of wisdom from the Pastor. Read stories from other Brothers and Sisters in Christ, read Bible verses or watch videos. You can view photos from all sorts of church events, see a Calendar of Events and Chat live with other members that are online. And just as rewarding, you can post your own material to share. The different areas that each Elder is responsible for will have ‘groups’ within this site, just another way to get the word out more instantly and convenient.
This site and its groups will not be used to gossip or say derogatory un-Christian like remarks. There are only seven Elders at Holy Cross and not all have computers. If your Elder is one that doesn’t have internet service, every effort will be made to get them your message as soon as possible.
I encourage each of you to visit this site, log in, become a member and begin this new Christian sharing experience.
Just go to http://holycrosslutheran.ning.com. If you don’t have a computer, visit the library and use a computer there. This is an exclusive membership open to Holy Cross members, family and friends, and not open to everyone. All activity will be monitored and memberships approved. Why you might ask? Because by limiting the memberships we will hopefully avoid any unsolicited internet activity and activity from those with evil intentions. (My house doesn’t need refinancing, siding or a deck and I don’t need any medications.) Remember, Satan is constantly working to get the souls of Christians, he has the others already.
See you at the Elders Spot!
