Our Anttila Roots
Tyyne Kangas Pelto traced the Anttila family back to 1547. The family is one of the oldest in
Lohtajan, Finland. Juho Pekan-Poika, who came to Karhin Kylan (like a county) in 1547,
is the first known ancestor of the family.

The family was supposedly considered well-to-do because they owned 5 cows,
which were quite a few in those days. The land was handed down to the oldest sons
for generations until 1799, when it was divided between three brothers, sons of Heikki.
The brothers were Matti, Pekka, and Erkki. Thus the land had been undivided for 250 years.
(Descendants of these brothers still owned the land at Tyyne's writing.)

We are descendants of Heikki's son, Erkki. Mariaana Jaakantytar Antilla's parents were
of the 11th generation of Juho Pekan-Poika. Her father, Jaakko Antilla, was born
Jaakko Jaakinpoika on November 21, 1821. He farmed the home farm with his brothers.
He married Briita Matint-Niemi Eli Laurila (b. June 7, 1827) on July 7, 1850.

Ten children were born to Jaako and Briita. The oldest, Maijastiina, was born
September 26, 1852. She married a Typpi, but as he came to live in her home,
he became an Antilla. Mariaana was the next to the youngest. Only three of the ten
children lived to be adults. All the others died within two years of birth.

Jaako died in 1892. Briita moved with Jaako's family to Oulainen in 1899,
where she died in 1905 or 1906. Mariaana would not to join her husband in America
until her mother died. She brought the family to the U.S. in November of 1906.
