January
Tired after spending much of December in Madison – moving Brooke & Jason into their new home, their wonderful wedding, and Christmas at their house with Carol and members of Jason’s family –it was time to head south with the Winnebago View - out of the snow and cold. Had to use an electric heater to get it started! Major snow/ice storm delayed us at Brooke & Jason’s for a few nights. The trip between Cape Girardeau and Memphis was eerily strange – clear freeway with snow and ice-clogged side roads and no lights/power anywhere!!! Got to Memphis at midnight. Spent a week following the Mississippi River south into LA, then drove along the Coast to FL. Hurricane Katrina damage was still very evident.
February
Watched a lot of racing and rode the motorcycle a bit but it was unusually cold – freezing much of the 1st week in FL. Our AFS son, Victor Samudio, flew in from Panama with his colleague, Christian, to go to the Daytona 500. Then we took the bike to Key West for a couple of fantastic days.

Bike Week in Daytona was cold and windy. Bundled up and rode the bike over to Rich and Elaine Schumacher (Gail’s Dad’s cousin) but had to get back to the campgrounds while the sun gave some warmth. Then spent a week driving home. It was great to go, but also nice to get home again.

Mike and Gail went to the Milwaukee Area HAM fest with Harry Thibedeau to hear a presentation in microphones by Harry's friend, Bob Heil. While there, Harry and Gail took the General exam and passed. Gail's current call sign is KC9PLY but she has applied for a new call sign - W9GAB. Mike has his Extra Class license and the call sign AB9L.

Gail's brother, Bob Gustafson sold Gustafson's IGA. Their grandfather, Oscar Gustafson, started the first store in 1945 in downtown Park Falls, WI. Their father, Ernie, and his brother, Arnie moved the store to its final location on Highway 13.

Carol and her dog, Bailey, and Brooke & Jason with their dogs Bella and Loki came home for Easter. Mike's mother, Ruth, brother Bruce, and brother Dennis' family, Becky, Ashley, and Alean came for Easter dinner. Later, we took a trip out to Uncle John Slack's maple syrup shack.

Went to the NASCAR races at Talladega with the girls. They enjoyed the luxury of the View vs. tents. Got the “cheap seats” on the front stretch and they were great! Reserved them again for 2010.

Carol started “going with” DJ Slater, a reporter for the Wausau Daily Herald who she met through Young Professionals. Mike took DJ on the Wausau Firemen’s MDA ride and fun run. Jerry Kerl rode up from Cross Plains and gave Carol a ride - until she got too cold. DJ lasted the entire day – it was sleeting/snowing when the ride started and stayed cold and windy all day. Carol turned 28th on the 27th.

June
We took Bob & Kathy (Gail’s brother/wife) on our annual trip to The Masters at Cedar Lake Speedway. Gail’s cousin, Julie Morris, and husband, Vern, drove up from Janesville with their popup camper and Carol & DJ drove over from Wausau. Great weather, great camaraderie. June 29th we had a fun gathering of Gustafson relatives so they could visit with the Richard & Elaine Schumacher and Don & Jean Mahnke (Elaine’s sister), Kangas relatives who were camping in the area.

July
Spent a very rainy 4th of July tent camping at a biker blues festival near Conesville, IA with Jerry Kerl and Brooke & Jason. Nice sunny day for the ride home. We also got together for the Sauk Prairie Harley Davidson MDA ride, but camped in the View rather than tents. Enjoyed seeing friends we’d made when we lived in Madison and rode with the SPHD Hog Chapter.
