August
Mike had his 40th class reunion during Flambeau Rama. Brooke & Jason came up, as did friends from Waupaca. Then it was time to head out with Jerry on our annual bike trip to Sturgis, SD and our long-awaited retirement trip to the West Coast. Covered around 5,000+ miles in 16 days. Cool (cold?) weather and windy mountain roads were physically taxing, but the breathtaking scenery was memorable. Decided we’re saving to get a trike before the next long trip. Had a wonderful visit with Ron & Cindy Marshall at Belle Fourche, SD. They’re friends we hadn’t seen since they left Madison about 15 years ago. Had dinner with Gail’s aunt, Lorraine (Gustafson) Johnson, and other family at cousin Carol Bender’s house in Coos Bay, OR.

September
Fall Ride at Tomahawk. On Friday, our neighbors, Larry & Cathy Kawleski led us (with Jerry Kerl) on a bike trip around Lake Tomahawk area, where Cathy grew up. Carol & DJ arrived in time to ride in the Friday evening parade with Mike & Jerry. As usual, we had fun at Bubba’s Campground – camping, listening to music, meeting new people, and drinking a little beer.

October
Bob and Kathy pulled their new trailer up to join us at ABC Raceway near Ashland for the Red Clay Classic, but the race was called on Saturday due to rain that just wasn’t stopping.

On October 15th, our nephew, David Statler (son of Skeeter & Sheila Statler, Mike’s sister), passed away from a systemic strep infection/pneumonia. We packed Mike’s mom into the motor home, picked up his brother, Bruce, at Stevens Point, and drove out to Caldwell, ID for the funeral. It was so sad as he was only 30 years old and left behind a wife, Angela, toddler son, Darien, and 2 stepdaughters. We were very happy that we had been able to see David and his wife on our August motorcycle trip to the West Coast.

The girls & their guys came up to celebrate Mike’s 58th birthday, so we had his mom, Ruth, and brother, Dennis, & family over for chili. DJ and Carol carved pumpkins.

November
Mike spent too much time working (for a retiree), so we stayed home until we picked up Carol to head to Brooke & Jason’s for Thanksgiving with Jerry Kerl, Jason’s parents, Steve & Sue Anderson, and his uncle/aunt, Phil & Joey Sinykin. Brooke and Gail (Mike, too) did some Black Friday shopping, and then the women baked Christmas cookies. DJ and his parents drove over from Franklin to join us for dinner at Benvenutos. It was our first meeting and we could see why Carol gets along so well with them.

December
Almost daily dustings of snow – just enough to be slippery – and cold temps remind us that winter has truly begun and Christmas can’t be far away. Christmas Eve will be at Carol’s house in Wausau, then DJ and Carol head to Franklin Christmas morning and Jason & Brooke head to Madison later that day. Gail’s sister, Claire, has invited us to Stevens Point on the 26th to celebrate Gail’s 58th birthday. Looking forward to more time with family.
