| The Allegheny Chapter Board Welcomes Members! The Chapter Board is responsible for administering the Care Abounds in Communities program in Allegheny County. We also approve new members to the Chapter as well as assist eligible participants in the Thrivent Choice program. Care Abounds in Communities allows Thrivent members to conduct fundraising and hands-on service projects. Thrivent members may conduct a project by forming a project team of six members and inviting others to help on a community project. Whether your congregation refers to community-based projects as "community outreach" or "social ministry", it's exciting for six or more to gather in His name to work together for 'our neighbors'. New members to the 2011 Allegheny Chapter Board are being sought. In order to better serve all the members of Allegheny County Chapter, additional Board members are being sought from the South Hills, Monroeville area and the Airport area. With over 10,000 Chapter members, it would be optimal to have ALL Board positions filled. Please call one of the current Board members if you are interested in serving on the Chapter Board, and more information can be found at "Volunteer Opportunities" selection (below).

On Sunday, November 7, Chapter members gathered at the Sen. John Heinz History Center for a Social Event and Chapter voting for the 2011 Board. This Social and Voting Event occurred when one of the largest Vatican collections to ever tour North America is on exhibition at the Sen. John Heinz History Center. “Vatican Splendors: A Journey through Faith and Art” features approximately 200 works of art and historically significant objects. Every object tells its own story, together forming a great mosaic of the history of the Church (including us Lutherans) and its impact on western civilization and illustrate 2,000 years of art, history, and culture. Original works by Michelangelo, as well as a first generation cast of his Pietà at St. Peter’s Basilica are part of the exhibit, as well as Guercino’s c. 1622 “Portrait of Christ with Crown of Thorns” painting, the first modern representation of Jesus that has never been on display at the Vatican. Thrivent Member's admission to Vatican Splendors was discounted 50% from $20 general admission).

| Award-Winning [Thrivent] Volunteers | | | On October 29, 2010, Northside Common Ministries (NCM) honors the selfless volunteer services and leadership of two Thrivent members:• Wendy Hall, of Trinity Evangelical Lutheran Church of Wexford and • Naomi Howard of Berkeley Hills Lutheran Church. The awards will be presented at the Champagne and Diamonds Dinner being held by NCM at the The Grand Hall of the Priory. Northside Common Ministries, founded in 1982 by a group of churches, attempts to meet the need of the homeless population. Pleasant Valley Shelter houses 25 to 30 men, and provides a variety of counseling services. The shelter is supported and facilitated by hundreds of volunteers, including members of some 60 church congregations who provide evening meals for Shelter residents throughout the year. The NCM Community Food Bank (412.323.1170) serves approximately 600 to 700 qualified families each month. Among local food pantries, it is the largest single client of the Greater Pittsburgh Community Food Bank. The Pantry has only one paid staff person, but dozens of volunteers work to solicit food contributions and assist clients in obtaining other necessary services. For tickets, please call Michael Glass (412.323.1163) or e-mail: mglass@ncmin.org More NCM information is available under the "Recognition Area". | NCM Award recipient Naomi Howard is well-known to the Allegheny Chapter Board. In addition to being the Chapter's "2009 Pirate Fan of the Game", we well know of her passion for the Pleasant Valley Shelter from her shake-downs for hotel soap and shampoo, as well as her dry wit. Her husband, John, who has served on the Allegheny Chapter Board for four years, may be able to get Naomi to the Awards Dinner (see box above). CONGRATULATIONS, Naomi!! | | |
