You may be familiar with sleepless nights. Or you may be one of those people who has a hard time shutting down at night. Can you imagine if you’re both?
On a recent sleepless night, I was wound tight with concern for a project coming due. Expectations were crashing into my mind and heart—my expectation of myself especially the desire not to let anyone down, the real and imaginary expectations of other people, the expectations of God. I wasn’t so much worried as unsettled.
Have you ever been told to take your concerns to God in prayer? And what do we do when we take our concerns and dump them at the foot of the cross? I suppose many of us pick them back up again. Well, that’s what I did this night. I couldn’t seem to leave my concerns in God’s very capable hands. As time ticked by and recognizing the need to sleep, I tried something different.
I prayed, “God, tomorrow I want you to use me in any way you see fit to glorify your name.” As I focused on that one prayer, peace began to settle in me. The expectations of all drifted in the background as I placed myself in God’s hands instead of my concerns. “God, use me to glorify your name.” It was my last thought as I drifted off to sleep and my first thought as the alarm clock awakened me from some of the most restful sleep I’ve had in weeks.
The uninterrupted, deep sleep was nice, but on account of the prayer, the interesting part was how the next day organized itself…
May you glorify God’s name today,
|
