At the Souper Bowl of Caring event last Sunday, the youth prayed for children “who are born in places where we wouldn’t be caught dead...who don’t have any bread to steal...who don’t have rooms to clean up...who go to bed hungry and cry themselves to sleep...who will eat anything...whose nightmares come in the daytime...who don’t get a second chance...who live and move, but have no being…” Thank you to the congregation for giving to Souper Bowl of Caring. We received 190 canned goods and many other nonperishable items to donate to Allied Churches. We appreciate your generosity but more so the children “who will grab the hand of anybody kind enough to offer it.” (Souper Bowl of Caring Prayer for Children, 2005)

| Mile Marker Fund Raiser |
 |
|
| In July of 2012, eight of our youth, Michael Cash, Drew Hamlet, Emily Hinton, Katie Hinton, Nic Horne, Hayley McCraw, Dakota Summers and Emily Thouin, along with two adult chaperones, Ashley Brandt and Stuart Brandt will be attending the ELCA National Youth Gathering in New Orleans.
As we all know with trips like this, it will cost us to support our youth in their dreams of attending this event. When it comes to our youth, they are the heart of our church and this is one way to show them the importance of hard work and growing in Christ’s love.
Our youth group will learn many valuable things that they will be able to bring back to our church and share with our community. As a creative and fun way to help our youth they will roll out a new fund raiser known as the Mile Marker.
We will have a huge board set up before and after our Sunday services and at special events to help us go to the National Youth Gathering next summer. So how does it work? We will have a board set up with numbers 1 through 150, each number represents 5 miles for us to get to New Orleans. To start, you will select a Mile Marker; for example number Mile Marker 1, you will make a $1.00 donation and now you are the Sponsor of Mile Marker 1.
From there, someone else can select Mile Marker 2, you will make a $2.00 donation and now you are the proud Sponsor of Mile Marker 2. These go through Mile Marker 150. Once a Mile Marker has been sponsored, no one else can sponsor it. This also is a great way to get our congregation to work with each other. If I want to Sponsor Mile Marker 10 and it has already been taken, I can find a friend who can donate $5.00 and we can go in together and Sponsor Mile Marker 15. We will continue this fund raiser until all
Mile Markers are full.
Once we get back from New Orleans, we will put together a
“Thank You” Bbooklet for everyone to see. All Mile Markers can be made in honor or in memory of a loved one. Please help Michael, Drew, Emily H., Katie, Nic, Hayley, Dakota and Emily T. go to New Orleans one Mile Marker at a time! We will start this the night of the Christmas Play during the reception. Small Mile Markers will fill up fast so make sure you get them while you can.
If you have any questions or concerns, please see Ashley Brandt for clarification.

 | FROM THE QUILTERS AT FRIEDENS
We have a situation in our area that cries out for help. Allied Churches' homeless shelter is being challenged to house and feed an unusually large -- and growing -- number of homeless people.
Below is a quote from their website:
________________________________________________________
We now provide emergency shelter to an average of 65 men, women and children nightly. In an effort to better serve our guests, the television room is now a dorm for women and children and the shelter remains open 24 hours a day to provide constant support for those families. We serve warm, nourishing lunchtime meals to an average of 125 people daily during the week.
Over the years, Friedens Church members have been very generous in their donations of groceries and in meals planned and served, and of course we hope that generosity continues, but recently we discovered a different kind of need. They need quilts.
The quilts we make for them are not complicated; anyone who knows how to sew a straight line could help. We sew 10- or 12-inch blocks to size, lay the finished top on soft batting and put a backing on it. Then we tie the layers together. So there's really no actual "hand quilting" involved. We have fabric and sewing machines, thread, cutting boards and rotary cutters. We really just need willing hands to put the materials together.
Please think about helping us to fulfill our mission to the homeless. We meet in the Fellowship Hall the first and third Tuesday of each month from 9 AM to noon. This is a great opportunity to get to know other church members better while doing God's work in this place.

Prayer Shawl Outreach Ministry
Attention: All Ladies Who Knit or Crochet
|

|
The Prayer Shawl Ministry will resume meeting beginning September 21 The Third MONDAY of each month, at 1:30 PM, in the church library.
Please note the new time! We have decided to try a daytime meeting to make it easier for members who do not like to drive at night to come join us.
If you are not familiar with the Prayer Shawl Ministry, we knit and crochet prayer shawls to give to anyone, man or woman, who is going through difficult times or blessed with a happy occasion. Church members are welcome to select a shawl to send or give to someone they know might be in need. Records are kept so that we keep count of the number of shawls that were made and to whom they were given. If we have an abundance of shawls, we send some to Moses Cone Hospital to give to those in need.
We have a nice supply of yarn, in the library closet, bought with the donations people send us to keep the ministry going. If you are considering a memorial to church, you might consider the Prayer Shawl Ministry. The yarn is free for you to take to knit or crochet a shawl, or if you chose, use yarn you might have. We invite anyone interested to come to the meeting, and we will help you get started in this wonderful ministry. The meetings are a time of exchanging of ideas and fellowship. At the close of each meeting, all the shawls members have completed are blessed.
