Bruce Maurer, a Lutheran Community Services Specialist with Thrivent Financial for Lutherans, and Nichole Baker share a relaxed moment after enjoying an ice cream break a hot and busy day of building. Bruce is one of more than 120 local Lutherans and Thrivent members that donated labor to help build the Baker’s home, which was dedicated in early August.

Mike Moran served as the chapter specialist (project leader) for the Johnson Co., IA Chapter of Thrivent Financial. Mike worked closely with Iowa Valley Habitat for Humanity staff and Thrivent Financial volunteers throughout the county to recruit local Lutheran volunteers and raise funds to cover his chapter’s financial contribution toward the cost of sponsoring the home.
The project cost $122,100 to fund, with the majority of the cost, $85,470 (70%), donated by Thrivent Financial. The local Habitat affiliate raised $24,420 (20%). The Johnson County, IA Chapter of Thrivent raised the remaining $12,210 through contributions from members, Lutheran congregations and individuals.
