| | A Journey to the Gulf Coast | |
 | Jim & Ann Tapp, Abilene, Kansas | |
Our purpose for being in Biloxi was to join other volunteers for a week, working with Habitat, who has partnered with Thrivent and the Salvation Army, to build a large number of houses for families in the Biloxi and Gulf Coast who could not afford housing by other means. The house we worked on had been started, so our team spent their time finishing the nailing of the sheeting and moisture barrier on the outside walls, installing doors, windows, and completing the front deck.On the last workday on the house, the lady of the family that is getting this house, came by and said “Thank You” and gave each of us a big hug to express her deep appreciation for what we were doing for her and her family. Ann and I came away with a great feeling for what had been accomplished during the week and we now realize the great need for affordable housing for so many devastated by Katrina. This program is certainly recommended to anyone having the time and desire to spend a week helping someone, who could never experience a home of their own any other way.
