Matamoros Mexico Mission Trip

Quilts Delivered to Matamoros Residents

Cathy Visiting with Local Children
Twelve local Thrivent members traveled to Matamoros, Mexico in February on a mission trip sponsored through Adventures in Missions based in Florida. Supplemental funds were provided from Iowa County Chapter of Thrivent Financial to help with their ministry and supplies during their week long stay. Says Cathy Bramlett, "We allowed God to lead us to people and places. These are the people and places God led them in Cathy's words:

* We ministered to 102 people at a food kitchen, women's shelter and other sites they visited as well as ministering to 78 children at Vacation Bible School.
* Hurricane Emily caused a lot of damage last summer. We helped repair a roof for Leonora & Jose, which seemed to ease the pain from a month ago when they lost their 4 day old baby.
* We helped Gregorio, who is paralyzed, with his difficult situation
* We ministered with Grandparents whom they had met 3 years ago. At that time they were raising their 5 grandchildren in the back of a cloth covered pick-up truck. Today the grandchildren are in school and doing well.
* Syntia, a single mother of 4 children, received books for her children for school, food, clothing, & necessities. She really needs our prayers because of her difficult situation where she is living now. She needs to move quickly & quietly because she is not safe.
* Mercedes is trying to support her 9 children, but needs a boat. Her oldest daughter, Amelia, is staying with her 6 younger siblings and she also has 2 children of her own to care for. Your donations will go towards a boat for her.
* We visited so many women who are single mothers and cannot support their families because they do not have anyone to look after their children. They wouldn't even consider asking someone to watch their children so they could go to work. They'd rather stay home. It is difficult because they don't know where their next meal is coming from.
* How special it was to have birthday cake with Leo & Maria's family as they celebrated their daughter, Karla's, birthday! We built a house for them 3 years ago.
* We built steps and painted Enrique & Henriqueta's house. Enrique lost one leg to diabetes and he sells cactus downtown during the day.
* Magdalenta and Nate are students at the institute learning to become pastors. They have a burning desire to share the truth about salvation every day. Their passion for ministry & God's work is incredible!
* We ministered to Guadalupe & 3 of her 4 children. We met her 3 years ago. She looks so much better and happier, and she still has her bible from us!

Again, we thank you for your prayers because through your support and the Holy Spirit, Our group was able to show God's love to so many in Matamoros. For this I say, "Gloria a Dios!" which means Glory to God!

Sincerely,

Cathy Bramlett

Karla's Birthday Party!

Brian Mester Benefit
A sucessful benefit dance, silent auction and Tastefully Simple open book party was held in March at Lucky's Bar and Grill in Barneveld. Brian underwent radiation and rounds of chemo therapy for a tumor in his chest. Brian also underwent surgery to remove the tumor when the radiation and chemo therapy were completed. Our prayers and thoughts will be with Brian as he continues his fight against cancer. Nearly $8000.00 was raised at this fundraiser to assist with medical expenses and living expenses. Brian's family and friends express their heartfelt thanks for the wonderful support from the community.
Congregational Coordinator Training Seminar
On Sunday March 19, 2006 at Grace Lutheran Church in Dodgeville, Jana Hoffman, Lutheran Community Services Specialist from the Southwest WI Regional office in Madison conducted a training seminar for our congregational coordinators and chapter leadership board.
Jana answered many questions about the Care in Congregations, Care in Communities, and Care in Regions programs. Such as how to request funding, how the money flows, how to report results, how to make your funds go further, counting volunteer hours and what counts as a volunteer hour.
Join Hands Day is coming up on May 6, 2006. It is a national event to connect all age groups and different fraternal and volunteer organizations and celebrate our volunteers. If you see a need or have ideas please contact a chapter leadership board member to discuss how to apply for funds to conduct your activity.
Jana also introduced the Thrivent Builds with Habitat for Humanity Program, where Thrivent members can become involved in all stages of building decent, affordable homes for deserving families in our areas. From fundraising to praying and serving lunches to pounding nails, we can make the dream of owning a home a reality. There is also Thrivent Builds Giving which is much like the Giving Plus program where as members, we can enhance our financial gifts to eligible organizations and for every $2 donated up to $600.00 each year, Thrivent Financial will contribute $1. There is also an exciting opportunity to serve in another way through Thrivent Builds Worldwide. As benefit members we can spend time abroad working on a Habitat for Humanity home.
This seminar was very informative and helped provide a better understanding of Thrivent Financial and our roles as members. If you have any questions or would like more information please contact a chapter leadership board member from the Meet Our Chapter Leaders page of this site.
