2006-2009 Thrivent Chapter Built 4 Thrivent Builds Houses |
|
East Marathon County Thrivent Chapter and some churches from West Marathon County partnered with Habitat for Humanity of Wausau to construct 4 Thrivent Builds houses in the Wausau area. One Thrivent Builds house was constructed each year from 2006-2009.
The difference between a Thrivent Builds house and a Habitat for Humanity house only exists in how it is funded, and where the volunteers came from. Each Thrivent Builds house was 65% paid by a grant from Thrivent, 10% from Lutherans and Lutheran churches, and the remaining 25% came from Habitat for Humanity of Wausau. At least half of the volunteers needed to be Lutheran, and half of those Lutherans needed to be Thrivent members. We surpassed those goals easily - THANK YOU ! Thrivent Builds was also a capacity building event for the local Habitat affiliate. The Thrivent Builds house needed to be an extra house constructed than was otherwise planned. Many of the volunteers came back Saturday Build Day after Saturday Build Day, and a new Thrivent "crew of regulars" was established too.
Many Thrivent members and other Lutherans volunteered for a half or full Saturday to build a house for a family in need of safe, decent housing. Many of our churches created fundraisers to reach our minimum 10% cost of building each house goal, and we came close or surpassed it each time.
Thank you to everyone who joined the family, and neighbors as we offered thanks to God for what was completed each year at the house dedications. |

Are you ready to express your faith in an exciting, new way?
Habitat for Humanity Wausau helps individuals achieve greater economic independence through the building of decent, simple, affordable homes. Building these homes is more than just boards and blocks. It’s sweat and smiles, borne of hard work and expressions of faith. There are many ways you can help…and they’re not all swinging hammers.
What is the Habitat for Humanity model for working with families in need of decent shelter?
Through volunteer labor and donations of money and materials, Habitat builds simple, decent houses with the help of the homeowner (partner) families. Habitat houses are sold to partner families at no profit; and are financed with no-interest loans. The homeowners’ monthly mortgage payments are used to build more Habitat houses.
Each partner family receiving a Habitat house must meet three conditions:
1. They must currently live in sub-standard housing (overcrowded or dilapidated);
2. They must have a job to pay for a no interest mortgage; and
3. They must be willing and able to complete a minimum of 300 hours of "sweat equity" prior to moving into their home.
What's happening in the Wausau area?
Habitat for Humanity Wausau has been building homes since 1990. Every year, 3 houses were started with the construction trade classes at 3 Wausau area high schools, and volunteers created garages, added drywall, added siding, and installed basic landscaping at each house.
Want to donate money?
Every dollar you contribute to Habitat for Humanity Wausau goes farther. A tithe from each donation goes to construct a home in Zambia through Habitat for Humanity International.

On Sunday, September 13, 2009, the house at 1531 Bos Creek Drive became a home. We had great weather for over 65 people who celebrated all of the volunteers who made this home possible.
In just three months (June through August), many volunteers now know that building a home through Thrivent Builds with Habitat for Humanity is a profound experience.
Some Statistics:
- 390 total volunteers;
- 61% of the volunteers were Lutherans (238 people); and

Each volunteer was counted as a new person when they came back to volunteer a second Saturday. Therefore, many volunteers enjoyed the experience so much that they returned on a second Saturday build day.
