Hyman Named Fraternalist of the Year |
Ankeny, Iowa (July 28, 2011) Richard Hyman of Dubuque was named Thrivent Financial for Lutherans Fraternalist of the Year at the annual meeting of the Iowa Fraternal Alliance (part of the American Fraternal Alliance) held in Ankeny, Iowa. Fraternal Alliance President Kelvin Sohl presented Hyman with the award at the evening banquet. Hyman was selected to receive the award because of his volunteerism in the community. Sohl commended Hyman on the number of volunteer hours given in service since his retirement in 2000. Some of the many organizations that have benefited from Hyman’s 8,850 volunteer hours are: Mobile Meals, Mines of Spain, Camp EWALU, Habitat for Humanity, Thrivent Builds, RSVP, and the Maria House to name just a few. He has also given his time serving on the Dubuque County Thrivent Chapter Board and previously on the former Aid Association for Lutherans board. Richard and his wife Sandra are active members of St. Peter Lutheran Church in Dubuque. “Fraternal benefit societies have quietly played a key role in helping build and maintain the economic and social infrastructure of this country,” said Brad Hewitt, president and CEO of Thrivent Financial for Lutherans. “We are in a unique position to further build social capital and make a significant difference in communities nationwide through the volunteerism and charitable giving of our members.” The American Fraternal Alliance (AFA) unites 70 not-for-profit fraternal benefit societies that represent 9 million members in more than 31,500 chapters, making it one of North America’s largest member networks. Thrivent Financial for Lutherans is the largest fraternal benefit society in the nation. Thrivent Financial for Lutherans is a non-profit, Fortune 500 financial services membership organization helping approximately 2.5 million members achieve financial security and give back to their communities. Thrivent Financial and it affiliates offer a broad rand of financial products and services including life insurance, annuities, mutual funds, disability income insurance, bank products and more. Join Hands Day 2011 |
Landscaping at the Manasseh House |
Serving lunch at the Dubuque Rescue Mission |
Join Hands Day is a national volunteer effort that brings youth and adults together to improve communities and have fun while helping others. This year, on Saturday May 14th, we gathered at Holy Trinity Church for a light breakfast and instructions on what our day of service would look like. Sara McCaw, Youth and Family Director of Holy Trinity Church read morning devotion before we divided into two groups. One group stayed to prepare a lunch meal for the Dubuque Rescue Mission. After the meal was prepared they went downtown and helped serve. The other group gathered their gardening tools and went downtown to the Manasseh House for women. Here they planted 75 rose plants, weeded, and placed over sixty-five - 2 cubic foot bags of redwood chips. We bought an additional wheelbarrow and shovel that we left for their use. A total of 24 adults and youth volunteers from 3 churches gave a total of 149 hours including preparing for this day. After both groups were finished, we gathered at Holy Trinity to close our time together with a devotion read by Mark Beard, Youth and Family Minister of St. Peter. |
