St. Paul Lutheran Church (Preble) LCMS |

Saint Paul Evangelical Lutheran Church 4510 W 750 N Decatur, IN 46733Pastor: Dr. Daniel J Brege Church phone: 260-547-4176 Pastor's phone: 260-547-4256 Saint Paul Evangelical Lutheran Church was established in 1873 to be a congregation of God's people gathered around His Word and Sacraments near the little burg of Preble. The center of her proclamation has always been Christ, crucified and risen. Th is her foundational teaching because this is the foundational teaching clearly portrayed in both the Old and New Testaments of God's inspired, inerrant Word, and it is the foundational teaching faithfully confessed in "The Book of Concord", the official confessional statement of the Evangelical Lutheran Church. Worship services are currently conducted on Sundays at 8am and 10:15am, with adult Bible Class and children's Sunday School held between services. The summer schedule has varied in recent years. Current Baptized membership stands at 535. From 1853 to 1873 the parish school teacher who taught at Zion Lutheran School (Friedheim) also conducted classes at a Preble branch-school twice a week. Then on August 19, 1873 St. Paul Evangelical Lutheran Church of Preble was officially charted as a member-congregation of the Lutheran Church-Missouri Synod. By 1881 the members had constructed a stately brick sanctuary to the glory of God. Though the church building was re-bricked in the 1940's and was enlarged and refurbished in the 1980's, yet the basic structure of 1883 remains at the heart of the current building. Originally the congregation supported her own Lutheran elementary school, and then in 1968 her members joined with the members of St. John Lutheran Church of Bingen and Zion Lutheran Church of Friedheim, to form the "Wyneken Memorial Lutheran School Association". The "Wyneken School," located adjacent to St. John Lutheran Church north of Decatur, continues to be a vibrant tool of Christian instruction and a center for special Christ-centered activities. In 2003 the three "Wyneken Churches" joined hands to improve and enlarge their school, nearly doubling its floor space. The Lord has truly blessed St. Paul Lutheran Church in its 132-year history. May the Lord of the Church continue to bless this congregation and all congregations with fidelity to His Word and Sacraments.

Lutheranism, strong among families of Preble, Root, and Union Townships of Adams County, grew slowly in the town of Decatur as rural families retired to the town after 1870, when Decatur was a town of 947 people. The Rev. Fritze, pastor of St. Peter's Lutheran Church--Fuelling organized the nucleus of the church in Decatur in the early 1870s. After his death in 1877, the Fritze family moved to Decatur and asked Rev. Hahn to continue services at their home and also at the Westerfield Home, the courthouse, and then at the old Christian Church at the corner of 4th and Monroe Streets. Over the following years, the Lutherans in town were served by Rev.Spiegel, of St. Paul's Lutheran Church--Preble, and Revs. Berg and Heinze of St. Peter's Lutheran Church--Fuelling. In 1990, Rev.J.H. Klausing of St. Paul's Lutheran Church--Preble started serving the Lutherans in town. Through his persistent efforts and those of Henry Lankenau, a former teacher at St. John's Lutheran Church--Bingen the church was finally organized on December 1, 1901 with 20 members signing the constitution. In the same meeting, Pastor Klausing was called as the itinerant pastor of the newly organized congregation. In May, 1903 the first sanctuary was dedicated to the glory of God at the corner of 11th and Monroe Streets on the west edge of the town. Over the years as the Lord has blessed the congregation with growth, the congregation has expanded its ministry campus to include a new sanctury, school, and a Family Life Center. At the present time, the congregation consists of 1024 baptized souls and 786 communicant members. Everyone Everywhere Sharing Christ! is the mission statement adopted by the congregation in November, 2004. This has been the focus of Zion's ministry for over 104 years and it will continue to be its focus in the years to come. Zion has been placed by God in the city of Decatur to proclaim the good news of Jesus Christ into the lives of her members and the residents of the community. This is done each week at Zion through public worship, Bible study, and the ministry of its preschool and day school. Peace Lutheran of Berne (LCMS) |

|
Peace Lutheran Church 201 South Fulton Street Berne, IN 46711Pastor: Rev Donald Sauls Worship: Sunday 10:30 a.m. 9:15 a.m. Sunday School Peace Lutheran Church had its preliminary beginning in a meeting of four Lutheran couples in a home on December 6, 1965. The result of that meeting was the decision to explore the possibilities of beginning a Lutheran congregation in the Berne-Geneva area. Twenty-six interested persons attended a meeting on February 15,1966. The group decided to meet monthly until September when a vicar could be available to begin regular services. On May 16, 1966 the small congregation with guidance from the Mission Board of Indiana District decided to purchase The Trinity Evangelical United Brethren Church building at the cost of $15,000. On June 20, 1966 the congregation named itself Peace Lutheran Church of Berne, Indiana. Peace Lutheran Church held its first worship service in The EUB Church on September 11, 1966 at 10:45 a.m. with Vicar Norman Stoppenhagen officiating. After Vicar Stoppenhagen returned to the Seminary the congregation was served by Concordia Senior College professors. Peace Congregation joined in a dual parish arrangement with St. Peter (Fuelling) of Decatur to call a pastor to serve both congregations. On December 17, 1967, The Reverend Roger D. Eden was installed as pastor of Peace Lutheran Church and St. Peter Lutheran Church. Peace Congregation joined in a dual parish arrangement with Trinity EUB until late April of 1968. On the last Sunday in April Peace Congregation had complete use of the building. On that day a class of four children was received into membership by the Rite of Confirmation. That very week work began on the remodeling and renovation project which had been planned by the Church Council and approved by the Voters Assembly. Today we note the completion of the Renovation and Refurnishing project. For the members and friends of Peace Lutheran Church it is indeed a happy and wonderful occasion. Our history is brief and yet much has happened; but we are anxious to carry on the work The Lord has for us to do in the days and years that remain before He comes. The hopes of the small group in 1966 have been realized. There is now in Berne a congregation bound by the Lutheran Confessions, giving instruction and teaching according to Lutheran doctrine, Holding regular Lutheran worship services, and celebrating the Sacraments according to the Lutheran rite. Yet, those hopes though realized in part are still and will remain unfulfilled, because we must continue to be faithful witnesses to The Gospel of Jesus Christ and prepare men for life in The Kingdom of Christ. This work will not end today or tomorrow. It must continue.
