The West Houston Chapter completed 31 projects this year. Here are the highlights of just a few of those projects:

2005 Project Highlights
Here are a few highlights from some 2005 projects. This might help you develop some new ideas.

Sweet Family Benefit

West Houston Chapter Financial Director, Carol Ziegler and Records Director, Cissy Wong were happy to see many organizations come together to help God's children!
The Sweet Family was in a horrible accident during a rainstorm on February 24, 2005. Their car was hit nearly head-on by a speeding driver with a suspended license. The five year old was uninjured, Mrs. Sweet had minor injuries including whiplash however, the two older children were critically injured. The 13 year old, a girl, was in the hospital one week and continues to be bed-ridden with a hip that is broken in three places (she also has a broken arm and facial lacerations). The oldest child was the worst injured with permanent head injuries, a broken leg and was moved to a rehab center. Mrs. Sweet is a wonderful, very Christian woman who was trying to make it on her own the best she could - she told her children that she could provide them shelter and the necessities, but there would not be much more. The teachers of Cook Middle School, Cy-Fair ISD, have said that the students were wonderful. The Benefit was held on Saturday, April 9th from 4-7pm to raise money for the Sweet Familiy's medical expenses. The benefit was held at Winchester Country Clubhouse (9607 Rio Grande, Houston). A spaghetti dinner was served. There was a silent auction, bake sale, and fun for the whole family at the benefit dinner. The West Houston Chapter of Thrivent for Lutherans will be matching up to $2100 of the funds raised for the evening.

Join Hands Day Projects
This year there were 2 Join Hands Day Projects. The first project, "Blinds for Homes" sent the following note:

Thank you for the opportunity to experience a Join Hands Day Event!

The new blinds at Haddington Group Home look wonderful and the residents are thrilled! We were also able to purchase some additional chairs to go around the dining room table so that the staff people are not able to eat meals with the six residents. This is good because they are able to demonstrate proper eating habits and manners during the meals.

In addition, this project inspired several of the people helping. In all, donations to the Group home finally totaled $1500. This included a new dining table and 4 new chairs, a couch, a chair, 2 end tables, 2 coffee tables, a set of dishes and a lamp.

The second project, Communidad de Gracia Community Event. Rev. Steve Sohns was in charge of the project.

Thursday, May 4th. A dozen+ people went down to CDG to fix up what has already been done with termite control. We were blessed to receive a discount on chemicals from a $6000 cost to $1500. We pulled the money together for that. We prepared CDG, buffing floors, etc. to get the place ready.

May 5-7 - Team of 32 went down for the whole weekend. Others showed up on the 6th for the community Fiesta that we held there. We want to pump up CDG in the local community. Our team will worshipped at CDG on Sunday morning. Funds were used for t-shirts for the team, t-shirts for our staff, food, prizes, games, team cost, and anything else you can imagine for the weekend.

Pictures from both events will be added soon.

Sincerely,

Susan Giesecke
