CARE IN COMMUNITIES

Many of you are aware of an upcoming event: The Spring Fling to be held on Friday, June 5 at the McPherson Cellars in the Depot District, Lubbock. This event will benefit the four ministries on the South Plains of Lutheran Social Services. Neighborhood House, Health for Friends, Wedgewood South Assisted Living, and Foster Care/Adoption made requests to the Board. $500 was approved for each ministry for a total of $2000. The Board is requesting that the funds be matched 3 to 1.

Also approved by the Board was a requested from Beverly Wall and St. Paul Lutheran Church in Plainview. Fifteen of their households are participating in the planning of a Relay for Life to benefit the American Cancer Society. A request for $500 was approved by the Board with a 3 to 1 match.

Beveral Wall and St. Paul in Plainview also submitted a request for an activity called Bible Buddies. The youth meet once a week for 30 minutes with children from the Crisis Center and read to them while their mothers are in counseling. The children can take the books home. This will be a hands-on project as the youth will use the $500 grant to purchase books and their match will be the time they spend reading to the children each week.

Another request came from Clyde Wilke and the Volunteer Fire Department of that town. The event took place on March 30 and the $250 grant was to help toward the purchase of a new fire truck. A 3 to 1 match was requested. Our Chapter Board has supported this activity for the past 2-3 years.

One last request came from Betsy Fischer and her daughter's soccer team to benefit a child on the team with significant medical expenses. This garage sale took place on 3/28/09 with 8 families participating in the planning, etc. $800 was approved with a 3 to 1 match.
