East Bexar County Chapter Receives National Recognition

Join Hands Day "Green Space" work at KIPP Aspire Academy
The East Bexar County Chapter received a National Award for the Join Hands Day Project 2008 for a "Green Space" project performed with youth and volunteer labor at the KIPP Aspire Academy located in San Antonio, TX. This National Recognition Award was only one of ten recognized projects.out of 1,000 submissions. WIth the award a $1,000 cash award was also presented to KIPP Aspire.

KIPP Aspire Academy is a free college preparatory public middle school that provides a no excuses approach to an intercity 5-8 grade population through a educational program of high expectations and extended instructional time for a high degree of success in the program. Cementing relationships with Thrivent Fraternal Chapter members, area church groups and businesses, all groups came together to work together as an enjoyable work project.

60 adult volunteers and 120 students and youth participants working together to create a special inner-city "Green Space" out an ugly dirt space adjacent to a parking lot. Working together, to mix dirt and river rock into plant beds, install colorful, low maintenance plants and flowers, and spread granite rock around a walkway the group will create a special green place to be used by the students and surrounding inner-city community.
