Thrivent Builds update |
Thrivent Builds is still building! Please read below to discover how this long-time program, dedicated to providing new homes to those in need, is progressing."In 2010, the first rehabilitation home was started by Thrivent Builds, Habitat for Humanity. The row home at 740 N. 13th street in Reading is located directly across the street from the Reading High School. Because of the struggling economy, new home construction was delayed until 2011 at a site in Muhlenberg Township. The 13th street home was donated, saving costs of the property. "The home was completely gutted, new mechanicals and wiring installed and a new furnace purchased. Construction should be completed by the end of September and a single mother with four children will be moving in. There has been significant numbers of Lutheran volunteers on the crews and the funding for this year has been fully received from our churches. The NW Chapter has contributed over $2,000 for this year’s project. "The outlook for a build next year in Muhlenberg Township seems bright with support from Thrivent Financial for Lutherans expected to be given. Thrivent Builds has already gathered significant carry-over funds which will be put towards our match for this new build. "I encourage all congregations in the NW Chapter to support this worthwhile program, both with your financial contributions as well as with volunteer build teams. | Thrivent Annual Picnic, 2008 | Our picnic, held at Kauffman's Chicken and BBQ on September 14th, was a huge success! Everyone who attended enjoyed a day filled with great Kauffman's chicken and all kinds of fun activities, including complimentary miniature golf and bingo! We also elected our officers for the year of 2009.We took many "action shot" pictures during the event. We've placed a few on our website to show you an example of what exactly we do at our annual picnic. Simply click the underlined words at the bottom of this posting in order to see these photos. Couldn't attend this year? We're sorry you missed out on the fun, but keep checking this website for the date of next year's picnic! | | Click here to view our photo album! | | | | |

| Join Hands Day | Recently, volunteers from several churches came together. They met at Trinity Lutheran Church in Robesonia. Their mission: to build picnic tables! We had a great time coming together in fellowship and constructing these tables. Four of the completed picnic tables were gifted to four families, while the remaining tables were donated to the borough of Womelsdorf. Attached below are some pictures of the tables and the teams working on them. We hope the tables are helpful to their recipients. Most importantly, we hope to express God's love through them! We always look forward to projects where the church community is brought together; join us next time! | | View our photos! | | | | |

Thrivent Builds |
Thrivent Builds 2008 - Three more homes being built!
Thrivent Builds Homes is part of a four-year partnership between Thrivent Financial for Lutherans and Habitat for Humanity. Thrivent Financial provides grants for 65% of the building costs. The local Habitat group provides 25% and local Lutherans are asked to raise 10% of the building costs. The program also requires that 50% of the volunteer hours come from Lutherans and 25% from Thrivent Financial members.
There’s lots of activity on Luzerne Street in Glenside community of Reading, PA., at the site of the four homes (two duplexes) our chapter is helping to build. Thrivent Builds is responsible for three of the homes and a local business is sponsoring the fourth.
We have been blessed by the number of Lutheran congregations, county-wide, who have signed up to volunteer at the site, as well as the financial support that has been committed. There have been soup sales, plant sales, special collections and even a magic show to help raise funds. Some congregations have signed up to provide lunch for the volunteers. We expect to reach the $30,000 goal for the Lutheran’s 10% share of the building costs. But there are still commitments outstanding.
If you would like to volunteer, contact Donna Crosslund, 484-332-0877, of Habitat for Humanity Reading-Berks for more information. Contributions for the 2008 project can be made to “Thrivent Builds-SE Berks” and mailed to George Weida, 440 Walnuttown Rd, Fleetwood PA 19522.
