Just what did we accomplish in 4 1/2 days (some team members had 13 - 14 hour days)? 2 privately owned homes were mucked (the inside walls, ceilings, wiring, pipes etc removed) so they could be sprayed with Clorox solution to rid the space of mold. At a later time, other volunteers or contractors will help to rebuild these homes.
At the girls foster camp: a partial ceiling was removed to wrap the air conditioning pipes to prevent condensation leakage, new ceiling installed, taped, mudded and sanded. Another building was in need of bathroom repairs: walls removed, tubs removed, toilets removed and new tubs, walls and toilets were installed. New walls were taped, mudded and sanded and now these bathrooms are also ready to be painted. New shower curtains installed.
2 buildings now have beautiful stone paver sidewalks where there was nothing and 6 large flower pots were planted for the entrances of 3 of the buildings. Many large potholes were filled in the long driveway. A room with donated clothing for the girls (they can choose a article as a reward for good behavior, grades etc.) was totally revamped to become the “Unique Boutique” by 3 women. This room now says, there are some cool clothes and accessories that you want and deserve, because you ARE young women of value.
The largest building on this compound is used as the multipurpose building, cafeteria, game room and a has a very large kitchen: holes were closed up to prevent loss of heat or cool air conditioning, drop ceiling installed, large florescent light fixtures installed. Kitchen prep tables scoured and painted silver again, utility room scrubbed, new water heater installed, many, many supplies inventoried and put in storage areas, new plumbing for the kitchen, food storage areas scrubbed, cartons of cans and boxes of food inventoried and put on shelves, garbage truck man sweet talked into emptying the large dumpster twice and overall cleaning of this building until we ran out of time. (I know I forgot something).
Thank You notes for each member of our team had been created by the girls and placed on the shelves in their living quarters. Each note had chocolate candy kisses, X’s and O’s and a thank you written for each member of the team.
A note was also left: "To ALL of the wonderful workers who helped rebuild the cafeteria and the cabins, Thank you and God Bless you all. Love, the Girls."
We almost left the camp without seeing the notes (Habitat Volunteers who came on Friday afternoon found them, hope they painted the new walls), notes were taken back to the church and given to the team members at devotions the morning we left the Slidell area.
Each individual on the trip can tell a different and unique story. Without the volunteers and especially those with the churches, there would be a lot less rebuilding in the New Orleans area, the enormous loss is so very overwhelming.
