Care Abounds in Communities®
Thrivent Financial members receive financial support and other resources for volunteer projects and/or fund-raising activities that benefit individuals, families, local communities or organizations that are exempt from federal income tax under section 501©(3) of the Internal Revenue Code, excluding congregations. Members submit activity/funding requests to their local Thrivent chapter leadership board.

We are able to assist our community with approval of financial assistance, in the following projects through the local congregations:

February 21st. - Shrove Tuesday Pancake Dinner - Grace Lutheran:
Funds raised to purchase New Testaments for distribution at the New York State Fair.

March 24th.- Rocker-thon - Our Saviour Lutheran:
Annual fund raiser for Mom's House. Funds raised to support operational expenses

May 12th Rummage and Bake Sale. Christ the King
Funds to support kitchen renovation

July 15th- Picnic-Emmanuel -Funds to support Seminarian Keaton Christianson at Concordia Seminary

October 7th- PotLuck Dinner -Redeemer- To support Samaritans Purse "Shoe Box" program

October 21st -Annual CHOW Walk. Multiple Congregations

October and November Book Sale- Grace Lutheran - to support attendance at National Youth Gathering

November 12th- Harvest Dinner - OSLC - Support of Samaritan Counseling Center

December 8th - Breakfast with Santa OSLC - Support of Mom's House
Examples of Past Projects.
A number of programs supporting local "Food Banks", help to meet the hunger needs of our community, through walks, bake sales, sidewalk sales, food fests and more.

"Feed My Starving Children" a non-profit Christian organization committed to feeding God’s starving children hungry in body and spirit. The approach is simple: children and adults hand-pack meals formulated specially for starving children, and we ship the meals to nearly 70 countries around the world.

The annual CHOW Hunger Walk in October is the major single fund raiser for the year and a number of local congregations take part.

Mom’s House, a program to supply support to single moms or dads as they continue their education in all levels from high school through college. Child care is provide and the supported "mom’s" volunteer services in lieu of payment. A "Rocker-thon" and "Breakfast with Santa" to raise funds.

Samaritan Counseling center, a non profit center that offers professional counseling to those in need will be supported by funds raised at a "Bavarian Dinner"

Funds raised to supply mosquito nets to Africa.

A “pie social” to raise funds to provide turbans for cancer patients.

Boy Scout Camp Tuscarora is the recipient of hands on projects to electrify one of its buildings. Crews will the inside as well as routing underground power to the building.

An Easter egg hunt was both fun and a fund raiser to benefit “Our Daily Bread Food Pantry”

The Owego Free Academy Jazz band provided entertainment at a fund raiser designed to help the work camp project.

Personal Care items are being collected to be sent to service men stationed in Afganistan.

The “Work Camp Project “ a group of about 400 teen volunteers coming to our community to help with home repair projects to benefit those unable to do it themselves for any reason.

Fund raising yard sale to help local family who lost home in a fire.

Pancake Brunch and Time and Talent Auction to raise funds for Broome H.O.P.E. ( Helping our people in emergencies)

The "Soul Train Engine"
A group of about 90 children and adults gathered at Our Saviour for the somewhat annual Mom's House Rocker-thon. As some paticipants rocked and watched, others got right into the swing of the event. Charity is shown leading the "Soul Train"

A number of games and contests were played, such as the Limbo, cross-country skiing, hoola-hoop, musical chairs and trivia. A whole slew of prizes prizes awarded throughout the event. The music and direction for the games was provided by Steve the "DJ Guy" formally of WAAL. Refreshments and prizes provided by local merchants.

The Rocker-thon is one of the major fund raisers for Mom's House and we are happy to be a part of it.

Mom's House provides an outstanding child care service while single mothers and dads persue their education. Payment is in the form of service projects and scholastic achievment. For more information about this outstanding service visit Mom's House at http://www.momshouseny.org
