BUY COFFEE - CHANGE
LIVES
|
|
The WELCA group at St. John's is joining the LWR Coffee Project. Most Sundays after church, Equal Exchange
Fairly Traded Gourmet coffee will be offered for sale and sometimes served
fresh-brewed for you to sample. You may either buy from supplies on hand
or order from a select list. Travel mugs and tee shirts will also be
available. Prices are comparable to other specialty coffees. Orders
may also be placed by calling Margie Bonk at 299-3038.
For many of us, coffee is an
essential part of community--a warm invigorating beverage to enjoy in the
company of friends and neighbors. But, it is also a vital source of income
for thousands of small farmers and their families in some of the poorest
countries in the world. Cut off from markets they are forced to accept low
prices. Without affordable credit, they become trapped in a cycle of
debt. Many lack access to adequate housing, health care, education, or
even running water and electricity. Through the LWR Coffee Project and
Equal Exchange, farmers are paid a fair price for their coffee. In
addition, for every package of coffee sold through the project, a contribution
is made to LWR's Small Farmer Fund for relief and development projects in coffee
producing communities. All of this helps build a better economic suture
for these families and communities.
A short video was placed in the church library where it
can be checked out. Your purchases will make a difference in the lives of
small farmers in the Latin American, Africa, and Asia.
