Faith Lutheran Church is located in Northwest Iowa. We are part of the Northwest Iowa Synod and the Evangelical Lutheran Church of America (ELCA). Baptized membership is currently 160. Throughout the years Faith Lutheran has actively supported and served the community by delivering Meals on Wheels, taking food and clothing to Mid-Sioux in Cherokee, being involved in worship and other activities at Heartland Care Center, conducting a spaghetti supper to raise funds for community activities such as the fire department and others, making quilts for LWR, the women's shelter and others in need. The mission of serving and caring is also carried out by providing financial support to missionaries in Tanzania, the Church of Damascus Road prison ministry, Lutheran Services of Iowa and Lutheran Lakeside Camp.
Fellowship is an important part of this church. Each Sunday following worship there is a coffee fellowship time. During the season of Lent, the congregation has soup and sandwich suppers prior to an evening worship service. Twice a month men and women of the church meet at a local eating establishment for a breakfast fellowship that includes a devotion.
BRIEF HISTORY:
In 1876, the Swedes organized Carmel Church as a member of Augustana Lutheran Synod of America. They purchased the old Catholic Church to house their congregation. A new church home was built and dedicated on March 24, 1912.
On October 28, 1902, after three years of preaching to Danes living around the area, the Nazareth Danish Evangelical Lutheran Church was organized. The first building the group wanted was a parsonage to house a minister that would serve Marcus and Oyens. A theological student served the parish.
Faith Lutheran Church was organized in 1959 as a merger between Carmel Lutheran and Nazareth Lutheran. These two churches were located on opposite corners of West Cedar Street. The new church belonged to the Lutheran Church of America of the Iowa Synod and was consecrated on Jan. 18, 1959. Worship services were conducted in Carmel Church while the smaller Nazareth Church was used for Sunday School. The Nazareth Church was remodeled on the inside, installing Sunday School rooms in place of the sanctuary and eventually siding the building and adding a new rear entry. Children continue to gather on Sunday mornings to learn the message of God's love and grace.
February 200l Faith Lutheran yoked with Siloam Lutheran Church from Paullina, IA to carry out a shared ministry of Word and Sacrament. The women's group (WELCA) meet together for Bible study and an annual field trip to places of interest. Each year one outdoor service is held at Mill Creek Lodge in Paullina.
