On November 1, 2009, Grace Lutheran Church will celebrate its 45th anniversary with a special worship service at 10 a.m. followed by a dinner and program. Many preparations are in place to make this a festive occasion; special recognition will be given to the charter members, and a number of former members will be in attendance.

On Nov. 1, 1964, the first worship service was held under the name of Grace Lutheran Church at Thomas Dale High School in Chester. Charter members were Mrs. Bertha Baird, Mr. and Mrs. James Falconer, Mr. J. Coleman Falconer, Mr. and Mrs. William Hirsch, Mr. William Hirsch, Mr. David Hirsch, Mr. and Mrs. John Jones, Mr. and Mrs. William Lewis, Mr. and Mrs. Howard Maccubbin, Mr. Kenneth Mueller, Mrs. Arthur Mueller, Miss Susan Mueller, Mr. and Mrs. Howard Muller, Mr. D. Bruce Muller, Mr. and Mrs. James Olinger, Mrs. James Puckett, Mr. and Mrs. Walter Roberts, Mr. Darrold Roberts, Mrs. William Sheffield, Mr. and Mrs. Reade Shook (although unable to attend on Nov. 1st), Rev. and Mrs. Peter Steinke, Mr. Wayne Weaver, and Mr. and Mrs. Henry Williams.

The congregation moved into the building on Harrowgate Road in October, 1967, and the original church building was dedicated on March 3, 1968. Since then, several additions have been completed and a Memorial Garden has been added to the property. Membership has grown from the charter members to a current membership of about 450 members. Grace has had six pastors including Rev. Dr. Peter Steinke, Rev. Paul Prange, Rev. Henry Abram, Rev. Charles Werth, Rev. Herb Dorn, and currently Rev. Rich Finck.

God has indeed richly blessed Grace Lutheran Church in the past 45 years, and a joyous celebration is anticipated on November 1st!

How Can You Help?
This anniversary offers an opportunity to add to our church memorabilia and to make our historical records more complete. We are asking longtime members in particular to search for photos, programs, bulletins, and any other memorabilia which may contribute to our records and add to our anniversary displays. (We promise to return all materials!!) Please contact Christy Vest (796-3971) or Nancy Roberts (434-454-2269) if you have memorabilia we might be able to use.

If you have ideas, information, memorabilia, or anything else that might be helpful, please contact one of the committee co-chairs, Joan Philipkosky (804-536-5712) or Nancy Roberts (434-454-2269). Help us make this a really big event!
