Henry Carl August SchulkeHenry Schulke was born in Carlos Township on October 30, 1883, being the son of Henry and Augusta Schulke, pioneer residents of that community. He had been in failing health for the past five years and in the past six months was confined to his bed. He was given every possible medical and hospital aid but this was of no avail and he passed away at his home in Spruce Hill Township on January 22, 1943 at 9 a.m., being at the time of his death, 59 years 2 months and 23 days.
On March 28, 1905 he was married to Olive Hasbrouck, who is left to mourn his loss. He farmed for eight years in Ida Township and in 1912, Mr. Schulke bought a farm in Spruce Hill for and for the past 30 years this has been the family home.
Eleven children were born to his union, one of whom died in infancy. Surviving are: Clara (Mrs. Alfred Anderson) of Miltona, Herbert on home farm, Vernon of Alexandria, Bertha (Mrs. Venner Sunberg) of Osseo, Walter of Alexandria, Dorthea (Mrs. Jim Keller) of Glenwood, Laura (Mrs. Viggo Sorenson) of Minneapolis, Elmer, Elnora, and Norman, at home.
Seventeen grandchildren also survive and six brothers and sisters: Robert Schulke of Carlos, Elsie (Mrs. Herman Engfer) of Miltona, Wm. C. A. Schulke of Carlos, Alma (Mrs. Wm. Raap) of Alexandria, Alfred of Alexandria, Herman of St. Paul.
He was one of a family of 14 children, seven of whom have preceded him in death. Mr. Schulke was baptized and confirmed in the Lutheran faith. He was a member of the Miltona church.
Funeral services were held Tuesday, January 26 at 1:30 from the Anderson funeral home and at 2:30 from the first American Lutheran Church at Miltona.
Services were conducted by the reverend Lambert Engwall, assisted by student Chester Irving Johnson. Mrs. W.F. Malm sang, “Oh Safe to the Rock That Is Higher Than I,” “God Calling Yet,” and “Children Of The Father,” with Mrs. Cleve Olson at the piano.
Interment was in the Carlos cemetery. Pallbearers were: Tore Myren, Arthur Olson, Sigurd Dahl, Fred Fiss, J.H. Fiss, J.H. Schmidt, and Max A. Zwieg.
