Sigrid Yldia Peterson was born on December 26, 1904, daughter of Ole and Anna (Haabala) Peterson in Buhl, Minnesota. She spent her early childhood in Buhl and then the family moved to Moe Township in 1912. She attended elementary school in Holmes City. Sigrid worked to earn room and board while attending high school. She graduated from Alexandria in 1923 and continued her education attending Normal Training. She later attended St. Cloud College receiving her Bachelor of Science degree while she continued her teaching career. Sigrid taught in the public schools of Douglas County and retired from teaching in 1971.Sigrid married August T. Schumacher on July 11, 1926 in Hillsboro, North Dakota. The couple farmed in Carlos and Belle River Townships and retired from farming in 1960 moving to Miltona. To this union three children were born: an infant daughter, Doris and Carl. Upon August’s death in 1990, Sigrid resided at Knute Nelson Memorial Home. Sigrid’s intention while there was to encourage and help others whenever she could.
Sigrid was a member of Mount Calvary Lutheran Church in Miltona. She enjoyed fishing, traveling, playing cards and reading. She did lovely hand work and crocheted many beautiful pieces for her family. Most of all, she enjoyed family gatherings spending time with those she loved most.
Sigrid died on July 27, 2000 at the age of 95. She is survived by daughter, Doris (Mike) Steidl of Miltona; daughter-in law, Charmae Schumacher; grandchildren, Dawn (Dennis) Hultstrand, Michael (Melanie) Steidl, Brian (Fayla) Steidl, Brenda (Tom) Chovan, Denise Hanson and Marvin Hoppe, Lori (Mark) Pfleiger, Darcy (Eric) Theising, Judy (Brian) Flug and Dana (Daren) Anderson; 24 great-grandchildren; sister, Inez Woody; and brother, Charles Peterson. Her parents; husband, August; son, Carl; an infant daughter, and brothers, Archie and John, preceded her in death.
A funeral service was held on July 31, 2000 at Mount Calvary Lutheran Church with Rev. Wade Meyer officiating. Ivy Christensen was the organist.
Interment was in Carlos Prairie Cemetery. Pallbearers were Dawn Hultstrand, Brenda Chovan, Michael Steidl, Lori Pfleiger, Darcy Theising, Denise Hanson, Dana Anderson, Brian Steidl and Judy Flug.
Arrangements were with the Anderson Funeral Home, Alexandria.
