SYNOD ASSEMBLY

MAY 1-3, 2009

The Eastern Washington-Idaho Synod Assembly will be held May 1-3 in Yakima. Pastor Betty and Don & Janine Jones will attend. The theme of the Assembly is “God’s Abundance Overflows.” Diana Butler Bass, will share good news of how various congregations are fulfilling the Great Commandment (Love God with all your heart and love your neighbor as yourself) and the Great Commission (go into all the world, teaching and baptizing)

This year’s assembly will also consider 4 motions on the recently released ELCA human sexuality study. A copy of the study is available on the ELCA website (www.elca.org) (lower right under 2009 Assembly) or from Pastor Betty. The pre-assembly meeting will be held Sunday, April 19 at 2:00 pm at St. Luke. All are welcome to attend. If you can comments for your delegates, please contact Don, Janine or Pastor Betty.

Other resolutions concern the West Bank and Gaza, the Bishop’s SHARE fund, and encouraging members of the assembly to participate in an offering of letters advocating justice and peace.

Please keep our synod in your prayers as we meet May 1-3.

YOUNG DISCIPLES

A TRIP TO THE BAKERY

How does bread get made? How do you make a whole bunch of cakes and cupcakes? Come join Sarah Gallagher’s father at the Safeway in the Valley where he will show us how a bakery operates - and maybe we’ll get to try some samples!

We’ll begin around 10 am on Saturday, May 9. Contact Kathleen for more details.

PENTECOST GERANIUMS

The festival of Pentecost will be celebrated on May 31. Pentecost is the day we celebrate the gift of the Holy Spirit to the church. The book of Acts (Acts 2:1-3) tells us that as the followers of Jesus were gathered together in one place, the Holy Spirit descended on them in the form of flames of fire. At St. Peter, we decorate our sanctuary with red geraniums and then plant them in the garden.

You can order a geranium this year for $4.75. If you would like to order a geranium, please fill out the form below and return it to the church office by May 15.

ASCENSION DAY MAY 21, 2009

This year we have something really special for our celebration of Ascension Day, May 21. The choral group Riversong will give a short concert in conjunction with our worship service. Riversong has given concerts all over the city and we are very fortunate to have them come to St. Peter. In addition, our own Karen Zachau is a member of Riversong. Worship will begin at 6:30 pm. Please plan to attend.

WANTED: A DIGITAL CAMERA

Sometimes there are events at the church that would be nice to record, but no camera available. A digital camera would allow us to take pictures and make prints quickly without having to wait until the roll of film is used up.

If you have a digital camera that you can donate to the church, please let Pastor Betty know.

PENTECOST: THE GIFT OF THE HOLY SPIRIT

MAY 31

Jesus ascended into heaven but did not leave us. Jesus sent the Holy Spirit on the day of Pentecost to be our guide and our advocate. The Holy Spirit came upon those early disciples of Jesus in the form of wind and flame so the color of Pentecost is red. The Holy Spirit comes to us in our baptism.

We will celebrate the Festival of Pentecost on May 31 with an affirmation of baptism and Leigh Ann Davis’ confirmation. The flower of the day will be red geraniums which will be planted around our sign. If you can, wear red in celebration of the gift of the Holy Spirit.
