ST. FRANCIS
BLESSING OF THE ANIMALS
OCTOBER 4

God created everything in the world, the sun, the moon, the stars, the birds, the fish, dogs and cats, and people. And on the sixth day, God looked at the creation and said, “This is very good.”

We know that everything we see is created by God, but sometimes we don’t act that way. But St. Francis, who died October 3, 1226, talked about brother sun and sister moon. And he loved animals and seemed to be able to relate to them very well. So the day when he entered into eternal life is also often celebrated as a day to bless the animals in our lives. In rural communities, people still bring horses, sheep and goats to the church where they are blessed. In some congregations, the sanctuary is filled with dogs, cats, parakeets and gold fish.

We want to remember that God is part of all our lives including the lives of our pets and other animals. You are invited to bring a picture of your pet to worship on Sunday, October 4, and we will bless your pets.

We will also have a collection for Spokanimal. They need dog and cat food, kitty litter, blankets and towels, bleach, laundry detergent, liquid hand soap, and paper towels.

REFORMATION SUNDAY
OCTOBER 25

On October 31, 1517, a young monk and university professor wanted to debate an important issue of his day: can you through money purchase the forgiveness of God. So in the absence of being a guest on a television show (TV wouldn’t show up for another 425 years), he posted a notice on the door of the Castle Church. Even then, this young monk was enthusiastic and sometimes over the top. On that notice were listed 95 reasons why God’s forgiveness cannot and should not be sold.

The town, Wittenberg, in Germany, was an out-of-the way backwater town of little importance. Yet what was begun that day changed Christianity forever.

You see, that monk, Martin Luther, had discovered that God’s love and God’s forgiveness were free gifts of God and once he knew that, nothing could move him from that place. He had to tell others. He had to tell the people in Wittenberg and the people all over Europe and other people believed that God’s love was given to us freely and the extent of God’s love was shown to us clearly in the life, death and resurrection of Jesus Christ.

When Luther nailed that notice on the door of the church, he began a movement to reform the Church - the Reformation. What we celebrate on this day is the rediscovery that forgiveness is a free gift of God through Jesus. We will also be celebrating with those who were baptized in October.

ALL SAINTS
NOVEMBER 1, 2009

Halloween is short for “all hallows eve(ning) or the day before “All Hallows.” It began around 609 A.D. when Pope Boniface IV dedicated a church in Rome to Mary and all the martyrs (by then, there were a lot of them). As more and more people were remembered as saints, there were more saints than days in the year so a special day was set aside to remember “everybody else.” In the Lutheran Church, we remember those in our congregation who have died in the previous year.

But we want to remember many saints. So in October, we will place a clipboard on a table in the narthex so that you can write down the names of anyone you would like to remember on that day. They do not have to have died in the previous year.

We stand on the shoulders of Christians made saints, not because of their good works, but because of Christ who saved them, and who was able to work through them to bless and heal the world.

ST. PETER’S GOT TALENT
AND FAITH STORIES

St. Peter and Victory Outreach will again be working together to provide a free Thanksgiving dinner for the community on November 21.

This year we plan to have people wait in our sanctuary rather than outside in the cold. While they are in the sanctuary, we would like to let them know about Jesus through music, plays and testimonies. Can you sing or play an instrument? Are you part of a band or choral group? Would you like to be part of a play? Can you tell others how Jesus is working in your life?

Please let Pastor Betty know if you would be interested in helping with this part of the dinner or if you would like to help in the kitchen. The office number is 487-4843.
