Shepherd Reaches Out to Others
We dedicate ourselves to helping others in a variety of ways. Shepherd serves as a collection site for the following non-profit agencies, and, through small group ministries, sponsors activities to assist our community. To schedule a drop-off appointment, or for information on any of these agencies or about small group ministries in general, please call 303.530.4422. Donation receipts are given.

COMMUNITY INFANT PROGRAM

A program of Boulder County Public Health, the Community Infant Program (CIP) works with high-risk families to promote healthy attachments between parents and infants. CIP services focus on positive parenting, healthy nutrition and feeding practices, and creating family support systems. Services are provided for a limited number of high-need families with children from birth to three years of age.

Shepherd reaches out to CIP by serving as a collection site for disposable diapers (all sizes) and cribs (we are unable to accept any other items, nor can we accept baby formula of any kind). The congregation also conducts a Thanksgiving Food Box collection for CIP clients each year.

Community Infant Program

The 2007 Shepherd-sponsored Thanksgiving Food Box collection resulted in 120 boxes of food, both canned and perishable (including milk and eggs, and coupons for turkeys), which were delivered to CIP clients.

This photo shows a portion of the 2007 assembly line as 120 boxes were packed. The entire line was ably set up and organized by the congregation youth and their advisor.

The boxes with perishable goods all ready to be loaded into vans and delivered.

BOULDER SHELTER FOR THE HOMELESS

Boulder Shelter for the Homeless (BSH) believes that all people deserve the basic necessities of life, and that the community in which we live is called to serve this purpose. It is the mission of the Boulder Shelter for the Homeless to provide safe shelter, food, support services, and an avenue to self-sufficiency for homeless adults in our community.

Shepherd reaches out to BSH by serving as a collection site for a variety of personal items such as toiletries, combs, blankets, socks, etc., as well as general housekeeping supplies. In fall/winter months we focus on jackets, gloves, and other cold-weather gear.

Congregation members will be serving meals (no cooking involved) at the Shelter the first Tuesday of each month, 5:30 p.m.-7:30 p.m., from October 2007 through April 2008. Anyone wishing to assist is invited to call the church office for more details.

SHEPHERD KNITTERS

Shepherd Knitters is a small group ministry of the congregation. The group endeavors to continue the ministry of Jesus Christ by knitting and crocheting items to be given to the community in need.

Shepherd Knitters reaches out to the community and the congregation by creating knitted and crocheted items. For example, in 2006 the group made bandages for tropical ulcer patients. This program, carried out by Lutheran churches across the U.S., was so successful that Global Health Ministries found they had more bandages than was needed.

This small group ministry gathers at Shepherd on Thursday mornings, and welcomes new participants.

At the present time, the group is knitting hats to be given to the Boulder Shelter for the Homeless. This activity will continue throughout 2008. No knitting experience necessary! Our knitters will teach you the simple technique to create these most welcome hats.

From time to time, as the need arises, the group knits shawls for ailing worshipers. The blessed shawls, called prayer shawls, are given with the collective prayers of the congregation.

The group also creates blankets for the bunkbeds at the Boulder Shelter for the Homeless, which are sponsored by individual worshipers. Please call the church office at 303.530.4422 for details on how you can sponsor a blanket.

NAVAJO EVANGELICAL LUTHERAN MISSION

Navajo Evangelical Lutheran Mission (NELM) in Rock Point, Arizona, rooted in the Gospel of Jesus Christ, is a community seeking to recognize and help meet the educational, health, social, and spiritual needs of the Navajo people, in partnership with the Navajo.

Shepherd reaches out to NELM by serving as a collection site for the Campbell's Labels for Education and General Mills Box Tops for Education programs. By collecting logos and labels, boxing and shipping them to NELM, we assist the Navajo people in purchasing additional equipment such as overhead projectors, computers, and playground equipment. During 2007, several large packages of labels and logos were sent to NELM.

LUTHERAN WORLD RELIEF COFFEE PROJECT

The Lutheran World Relief Fair Trade Coffee Project (FTC) ensures that more of the money one spends on coffee reaches the farmers who actually grow it. FTC is a simple solution that means the difference ― quite literally ― between surviving and not surviving for small-scale coffee farmers. FTC helps Lutherans answer the call to do justice, love mercy, and walk humbly by righting the injustices faced by small-scale farmers around the world.

Shepherd reaches out to FTC by submitting bi-monthly coffee orders for individuals and for use at congregation events. The coffee served at Shepherd each Sunday is fair trade coffee. Also available are cocoa mix and tea. From October through April, fair trade chocolate can be ordered as well.
