This site was created and compiled to share historical information and memories of
and about First Lutheran Church (located in downtown Nashville) and its congregation - past
and current congregation member as well as friends and family of the congregation. Also, with
the passing of time, this site has evolved into an attempt to display information of the
historical church buildings (architectural designers and structures) where the congregation
met to worship during its 150 (plus) years of history in Middle Tennessee. The initial purpose was to share the sermons of those who had served and worked with the
congregation of First Lutheran Church in downtown Nashville, Tennessee. Some of the pages
are reflections of those in the Evangelical Lutheran Church of American (as well as those of
other synods, some of which are now defunct). Other pages are photos and printed news of
activities and events on congregational members. Eventually, this site will attempt to bring
together a story on the 150 plus years of history from various sources.
This site is intended to include reflections of changes within the congregation and the surrounding
community of Nashville and Middle Tennessee, as well as the country. The influence (and personal
reflections) of the first pastor, Reverend Herman Eggers, can be read on pages of this website (from
material stored in the State of Tennessee Library and Archives). The influence that individuals such
as Reverend Eggers - and other members of this congregation - made upon shaping the growth, culture
and customs of Nashville and the surrounding area does not deserve to be understated. However,
relating the story of how this congregation/church and the Lutheran faith influenced Nashville
and Middle Tennessee has been relatively silent in the history books of this region for too many decades.
This site has a mission to break the silence, without intent to create embarrassment, misunderstanding
or misinformation of the history and heritage of Lutherans who worshipped and joined together for
fellowship. It is a site to share memories and as an aid for those who are seeking their link to
the history and heritage of the church and community which this mission church was founded.
