Parish Nurse Ministry at Lutheran Church of the Atonement
Reaching out into the Community to Care for God's Family in Body, Mind and Spirit
Welcome! You may browse public areas of our site.
The Parish Nurse Ministry is one of Atonement's ministries that serves the local community as well as our own congregation. We provide health education, consultations and referrals as well as a variety of support activities aimed at promoting wellness and ministering to the whole person: body, mind and spirit.
Praise the Lord, my soul, and do not forget how kind He is,
He forgives all my sins and heals all my diseases,
He keeps me from the grave and blesses me with love and mercy,
He fills my life with good things, so that I stay young and strong like an eagle.
Psalm 103: 2-5

12/12/11 "Lifestyle for Living" Program
This is a 8-week course designed to help people learn how to plan and prepare healthy meals. We will cook and eat the meal during class time. Participants will also explore activities which can be incorporated into their daily lives to promote fitness. Come join us for a fun way to learn! Class meets every Tuesday from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. in Fellowship Hall beginning on Jan. 10, 2012 and continuing until Feb. 28. Please call the nurses for more information and to sign up at 314-837-1090 Ext. 107! Deadline is Jan. 5.
12/12/2011 - Tai Chi for Arthritis Classes!

Arthritis Foundation TAI CHI Program is designed to improve the quality of life for people with arthritis using Sun style Tai Chi.
This style features agile steps and exercises that may improve mobility, breathing and relaxation and avoids deep bending and squatting.
These FREE 45-minute classes will meet in Fellowship Hall on Tuesday evenings at 7:30 pm and on Friday mornings at 10:00 am beginning on FEB. 7, 2012. To sign up or for more information please call the parish nurses at 314-837-1090.
3/10/2010 - Healthy Lifestyles Grant
Our parish nurses are pleased to announce their receipt of a grant from the Lutheran Foundation of St. Louis, the same organization that provided their start-up grant 15 years ago! (Lutheran Foundation of St. Louis is a local funder that supports efforts to see the Church brought into the lives of hurting people and people included in the healing life of the Church.) When combined with the congregational budget, this grant will restore full funding of our parish nurse ministry for one full year and will be used to expand wellness programs and exercise ministries, reaching out to both the congregation and the community.
Thank you Lutheran Foundation for your continued confidence and support in these difficult financial times!
World Tai Chi and Qigong Day
This is a global event to educate the community on the health benefits of Tai Chi and Qigong. Come to Lutheran Church of the Atonement on Saturday, April 24, 2010 between 10:00am and 12:00pm and see free demonstrations and learn how you can improve your health. For more information on World Tai Chi and Qigong Day visit: worldtaichiday.org.
12/20/2009 - H1N1 Flu Vaccine Information
A toll-free phone number for places in Missouri where H1N1 vaccines are available is 1-877-FLU-4141. Alternatively, a web site is: http://www.cdc.gov/h1n1flu/
2/26/2009 - Walk to Jerusalem
This is an activity we're doing this Lent that encourages physical activity with spiritual growth and cultural awareness. It begins on March 1 and finishes on Easter Sunday. You should keep track of your mileage as well as your other physical activity. (You can convert non-walking aerobic activity using the equivalence of 20 minutes = 1 mile.) Report your family's total results each week either by the map in the narthex or online here by clicking on the "Mileage Login" link. Every week you will also receive devotions, facts and trivia questions.
8/30/2008 - Walk to Bethlehem
In conjunction with the World Hunger Program, on September 28, 2008 we will begin a special walking/exercise program in which individuals choose their own exercise forms and times and families report their progress either at the church or online at the "Mileage log-in" link on this site. Group progress (converted to mileage equivalency) will be tabulated weekly, enabling us to "march" from Florissant to the holy city of Bethlehem, while enjoying trivia questions about the cities through which we are traveling. In addition, weekly devotionals will help us prepare to welcome the baby Jesus at our destination. Watch our group progress as it is tracked on a world map located in the narthex. For more about the program, go to the September Newsletter by clicking on its link on this page.
4/2/2008 - Late Life Journey & Slow Medicine
In a radio interview geriatrician Dennis McCullough, M.D., outlines the stages for the latter phase of our lives, focusing on dealing with the eventual decline of our loved ones' health. He recommends an approach termed "Slow Medicine," which advocates anticipating and attending to an elder's changing needs rather than waiting for a crisis to develop. He suggests that we need to learn that time and kindness are sometimes more humane at these late stages than state-of-the-art medical interventions. His book is entitled "My Mother, Your Mother."
11/17/2007 - HINTS Grant
We recently received a HINTS (Health Interventions in Non-Traditional Settings) grant from the Missouri Foundation for Health. This funding will help provide monies for a variety of activities including the arthritis exercise program, walking program and Chronic Disease Self-Management Program (for information on these programs, click the "Our Mission ... " link above). It will also enable purchase of new equipment and supplies as well as replacement of some outdated equipment.

Thanks be to God for this special blessing!

5/30/2007 - New Times: Office Hours & Arthritis Exercise
Starting June 11 Parish Nurse office hours on Mondays will shift to 10 a.m. - Noon. (Thursday hours will remain from 9 a.m. - 11 a.m.). Also, beginning June 11, Arthritis Exersise days will move to Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays (9 a.m. - 10 a.m.).
4/28/2007 - Measure Your Risk of Breast Cancer
Scientists at the National Cancer Institute have developed an online calculator that helps women, age 35 and over, estimate their individual risk of getting breast cancer. The calculator accounts for only the most important factors and thus requires answers to only a short list of questions including age, race, reproduction history and family history of the disease. Click here for more details and a link to the online calculator.
3/10/2007 - Measure Your Risk for Lung Cancer
An online tool has become available for assessing the risk of developing lung cancer for long-term smokers and former smokers between the ages of 50 and 75. For those still smoking, the tool provides an estimate of the risk reduction achievable from stopping. Former smokers should focus on reducing risk from Coronary Artery Disease because they're more likely to die from heart disease than lung cancer. Our parish nurses have a 10-year heart attack risk assessment tool that requires knowing only a few of your test results, such as total cholesterol and HDL. Just call our office and make an appointment for a consultation.
2/07/2007 - Arthritis Foundation Exercise Program
Think you can't exercise because of arthritic pain or decreased endurance? Did you know that exercise could help decrease your arthritic stiffness and pains and may help increase your endurance? This FREE class meets here at Atonement on Tuesdays and Fridays from 9-10 a.m. in Fellowship Hall. Call parish nurse Kristen Thompson at 314-837-1090 ext. 107 for more information.
01/12/2007 - Importance of Saying "No"
In a recent interview the author of the new book entitled, "No: Why Kids -- of All Ages -- Need to Hear It and Ways Parents Can Say It." The author contends that we now live in a "Yes" culture that gives kids the message that they should have whatever they want and that this leads to disappointment and failure rather than perseverance, patience and commitment. The book provides sensible, age-appropriate advice on how to say "no" and get on track to raise self-disciplined well-adjusted adults. Here's a link to the 50 minute interview/discussion that also includes a link to the book.
12/07/2006 - Rules for Internet Safety
More and more, disreputable opportunists are engaging in activities much worse than those annoying emails. Now identity thieves are becoming proficient in stealing passwords, account numbers and more. To learn six simple rules for online safety, read the Wall Street Journal's Nov. 14, 2006 Mossberg Report entitled: Safety Dance.
10/20/2006 - "Dippy Dinosaur" Bathtub Thermometer
Each year approximately 3,800 injuries and 34 deaths occur in the home due to scalding from excessively hot water! The majority of these accidents involve the elderly or children under five.
The Plumbing Industry Council offers a FREE bathtub thermometer to anyone who calls to request one at 314-770-0093.
12/2/2005 - New Parish Nurse: Kristen Thompson
The Health Cabinet is pleased to announce the appointment of Kristen Thompson, R.N., to fill the post recently vacated by nurse Elaine Skarstad. Kristen joins Nicki Reynolds, R.N., in advancing the health care and education ministry at Atonement. We also thank Elaine for her years of service, including creation of our diabetic support groups.
