2005 - THIS YEARS'S ACTIVITIES

MOTHER'S DAY SUNDAY

Members make a special Hymn presentation for Mothers Day
Multiple Activities made up Mother's Day Sunday in 2005
On Mother's Day SUnday 2005 St. Jacobi was was very busy place. Our Sunday worship had a special guest, a Hymn as a tribute, a planning meeting and the monthly Concert. What a busy day.

Lelia Johnson made sure that there were flowers available to be given to all for mom both at the Service as well as the Concert. The Sunday bilingual Worship had the added tribute of a Hymn that was offered as a special Tridute for Mothers day.

As for the special guest, that was Brooklyn District Attorney Charles Hines. He came and shared most of the Service. He had to leave early on orders of his niece to not be late for his family gathering for Mother's Day. He came to tell us of his efforts concerning Domestic Violence. With his were the Assistant DA for the special Domestic violence Unit and an Attorney from the unit who served as his interpreter speaking to the Congregation in Cantonese and staying to share in the light Luncheon after the Service.

The members of the Church active in the monthly Concert Series used the time before the Concert to review and plan for future events in the Series.

There was the monthly Concert at 4pm although not what was originally planned. Proferror Glenn McMillan, the Director of the Imani Gospel Choir of Medger Evers College offered a personal presentation about Spirituals in place of the Choir's program. The Chior members had conflicts with the day being Mother's Day and too many of their own family's plans.

2005 Annual Congregational Meeting
As called for in the St. Jacobi Constitution the annual Congregational meeting was held. It was a very cold January 30th both inside and out. But the meeting went on.

A delay in the fuel delivery for reasons yet unknown cause the fuel to fun out on Friday before the meeting and confirm on Sunday morning by the Oil Company Technician. Thaat's why it was so cold inside.

We started and went through the agenda quickly as there wasn't much to discuss as everything was so straight forward. The budget was passed, the Council elections were held, the reports accepted. We pray we find answers for some of our challenges for this year so that we may continue.

Central Baptist Gospel Choir - A Joyous Sound

The Choir during Concert
January 9th St. Jacobi was the host for the Central Baptist Gospel Choir. Dedicated singers who wowed the audience with their sound and joy for singing.

The Choir had some thirty members who showed the power of the human voice to praise and be joyous. A mix of voices and instruments in an hour's presentation that offered toe tapping to inspiration.

The group is recently back from a tour to Japan and this past Fall's singing of the National Anthem at the Republican National Convention. We were honored to hear them and thankful for the strenght received from them through our monthly concert in the series for healing after the events of 9-11.

Cool Jazz on a Hot Sunday
It was noticeably hot on the afternoon of Sunday, July 10 th in Brooklyn. But the monthly Concert was really cool - really cool jazz that is, presented by the HS Quartet.

The HS Quartet is made up of Harold Stelter on Drums, Pete Levin on Keyboards, Ron McClure on Bass and Bill Kinslow on Sax. All are accomplished musicians who have played with many of the very well known individuals and groups such as Bloood, Sweat & Tears, Barry White, Tony Bennett and Paul Simon.

Their program this Sunday included Randy Weston, Richard Rogers, Bennie Golson, George Gershwin, Rogers & Hart, Antonio Carlos Jabin and Victor Young. If you were not there then you missed an exceptional performance. Very cool inside, while it was hot outside. We thank these artists for giving us their time and talents.

Annual Church Picnic June 18th

.
On Saturday, June `8th, eleven members ventured to the far nothern reaches on Manhattan Island to Fort Tryon Park to participate in the annual Church Picnic event. The ultimate goal was to visit The Cloisters Museum and share in the event.

Although it took a little longer than planned to get there the grop was admitted at the Group Rate and had the opportunity to see the Medieval Art on display and to walk through the european castle brought over from Europe to hose the artworks.

Following the visit to the Cloister Museum those who brought Lunch as suggested found a bench in the Park and ate alfresco. Everyone else made selections at the Museums Cafe eatery which was a bit more pricey than expected by some. But they were warned it would be. That's not say that it wasn't good.

By early afternoon some had become walked out and the event broke=up for the day. At least one members then continued at the midtown Museum since admission was good there as well all day. It was different and enjoyed by all who attended.

SEEKING FUNDS FOR THRIVENT MATCHING GRANT

2005 Marching Grant
SUCCESS!

After announcing the program for matching funds available from Thrivent Financial for Lutherans our Fund Raising has become a success.

At the finance gathering on Monday evening, December 26th, the goal was made to reach $1300. Ms. Lelia Johnson, an Associate Thrivent for Lutheran member, announced just after the start of the meeting that we had just met our goal of $1300 received. With that Walter Forst the fundraising activity chair and Thrivent member, thanked all those contributing and called the effort a success.

In preparation for the meeting the activity has been annouced a number of time. keeping the cost of the fundraiser to an absolute minimum by announcing it regularly at meetings made it possible to reach the goal at the final finance meeting. Different perhaps but for this one time at least successful.

Again, thanks to those contributing and making it possible. We now look to 2006 and start preparing for next years needs and activities to reach the goal.

FREE FLU SHOT FOR THE PRE-REGISTERED

St. Jacobi's Friendship Hall
Just at 1pm as the free Flu Shot program was about to get underway. The room filled, the paperwork was being completed and the VNS staffers were about to start giving the shots.
.
On November 6th St. Jacobi hosted the 'Visiting Nurse Service of New York(VNS)' in a collaborative program to offer free Flu Shots for those 50 and older or with a cronic health problem. In addition for those over 65 anti-Pneumonia shots were also given.

Our Friendship Hall was filled with a half dozen plus VNS staffers, over a dozen volunteers, and about three hundred community residents between 1pm. and 5pm. The line to get in was three or four score long and reached around the corner on 55th Street between 1pm an 3pm. Thereafter it slowly shortened to a walk-in poin about 4:30pm.

We were nearly overwhlemed by the success. But it was the dedicated core of St. Jacobi members who met the challenges to organized and control the crowd. Everyone was appreciative of the service provided by St. Jacobi and this made it possible to get through with minimal problems.

We were pleased at our efforts and thank all who gave time to make the event happen.
